Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

Slitaz 3.0 didn't have this issue.

After installing/using livecd Slitaz 4.0 doesn't seem to properly utilise my integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. While the previous version worked without video lag out of the box, slitaz 4.0 runs in 1024x768 resolution and therefore the windows lag while dragging them. It's pure video lag. What should I do?

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

To get optimum resolution for my display (1440x900) without video lag on slitaz-4.0 I need firmware-radeon and xorg-xf86-video-ati installed before boot.

My graphics:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Cedar PRO [Radeon HD 5450] [1002:68f9]

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

It works now, but I have the same problem as on any linux: sometimes (it's completely random) the lag persists. For example, I've rebooted the PC several times and windows were still lagging a bit while I was dragging them and glxgears didn't show anything. However, once in a while, after a reboot everything works perfectly well and I can see glxgears showing the 3D animation without lag (although with red/green stripes all over it). This happens on ANY linux I try.

What should I do to fix this random nonsense? It's as if the OS is not capable of loading some modules correctly, because sometimes it lags and sometimes it doesn't.

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

Remove xorg-f86-video-xvesa since it may be defaulting to it which causes video lag on some systems. The ATI driver is pretty complete (it even has support for my old Radeon 7000 card).

If you're having issues with any Linux you try it may be related to something on your system. Windows may be forgiving with all bios settings or faulty hardware, but Linux isn't. Most Linuxes refuse to boot on my System unless I turn on RAM memory checking in the BIOS. I also experience the sound dying after the first 15 seconds if I turn on the onboard soundcard, but this happens in Windows too - faulty hardware hey.

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

But the thing that stays in my mind is that it's not like something's not working on all distros - it's as if some parts of the system don't always load up correctly. A few hours ago slitaz hanged on boot while setting up the hardware abstraction layer - nothing serious, a restart fixed it and I never saw it again, but doesn't this prove that many things just happen randomly? I mean, half of the time (and especially on my own custom setups like arch or ubuntu minimal) I have no lag related to the graphics card. But it just happens at random. How come it's working? Maybe there's just too much stuff going on on the kernel during booting, too many conflicting drivers or something?

One more thing. On minimal, custom desktops I usually install everything needed - xorg, ati radeon drivers, mesa dri packages and while the menus don't lag anymore, 3D apps (games) run at barely 10 fps. Whereas Linux Mint lxde (just an example) runs openarena flawlessly.

There must be a way to fix this... Maybe it's something related to dri modules loading incorrectly? Would building my own kernel fix it? Any other suggestions?

If the linux kernel is not as forgiving as windows for errors, then does it sometimes work without graphics card lag? Strange.

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

I'm experiencing somewhat similar issues with my ATI Radeon HD 3650 video card.

Here's what happens to me:

- app windows lag when dragged on the screen

- it happens with any driver that I use: radeon, ati, vesa

- it doesn't happen anymore if I activate composition from the Openbox menu

- it doesn't happen if I use compiz as WM

Any ideas why this happens?

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

Radeon HD cards? I remember reading about them on Xorg and Mesa's websites. They are currently the least supported cards for the standard driver. It is weird that turning on graphic intensive features in Linux fixes it. Maybe the cards something like cpu stepping that makes the GPU adjust to the graphical demands required, and when it's very inactive, it's function at low power mode that also cause the lag.

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

I've noticed that I didn't have the firmware-radeon package installed, so I installed it and retested this, and it still happens.

It also seems that installing this packet modified my xinitrc file, as compiz entry is missing now, could it be another bug? smile

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

Another strange issue is when browsing in Midori or tazweb, while scrolling: the page becomes blurry. The only way to remove the blur is to right click on the page (in the webbrowser) or to just move the mouse over (in system preferences apps).

The blur seems to be formed out of the Flash elements on the page (browser.png). This issue also happens when browsing the file system or other preferences apps (system-language.png).

Please see the attached screenshots.

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

My graphics card is an ATI RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M] I would like to set my screen resolution to 1024x768 but under Display Settings the only resolution options that are available are 800x600 and Auto.

I have the xorg-xf86-video-ati driver installed. I removed the xorg-xf86-video-vesa driver. When I boot the system it boots to the command line. Why is the ati driver not being detected?

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

@lfever

Login root password: root

tazx

Choose reconfigure xorg,ati

Restart xorg

slim

This only works if slitaz is connected to internet.

If xorg isn't starting look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log to find out why.

Verify it's using radeon driver.

You may have to add Modes to 70-Screen.conf,and horizsync/vertrefresh to 50-Monitor.conf manually:

Re: Resolution issues on Slitaz 4.0

hi mojo

In experimenting when I was at a cli login, logged on as root and deleted the xorg.conf file and rebooted and the ati driver was detected and now I can set my resolution to what I desire. This is probably not a good way to accomplish what I wanted but it did work. smile I see no ill effects so far. I will put the info you supplied in my book of goodies for future use.

Thanks for your response.
