Newbie here so please be gentle and not too technical.
Got Slitaz 4 Stable Core on a USB and its works brilliantly with persistence, very fast, absolutely love it.
But I cannot get a word processing package to work or install which effectively makes Slitaz worthless, let me explain.
Used Abiword in the past in Xubuntu, found it adequate if you accept the odd compatibility issue. But in Slitaz documents look nothing like the original, some are just a single line of text instead of several pages. The address headers are all on a single line and any paragraph spaces disappear even on the best documents. Did a Google, saw the comment about "glibc-locale" checked and it was already installed, reinstalled but no difference, still gibberish.
Decided to install LibreOffice, used the "get-install get-LibreOffice" in terminal and it downloaded whatever it does. Then "get-LibreOffice" and it downloaded LibreOffice but failed on extraction and eventually froze up checking the md5sum.
Am I doing something wrong or is there a cure for this? Without a working word processor Slitaz is of no use to me even if is it quick.
The laptop is a 10 year old Dell Inspiron, P4M 1700 processor, 20gb hard drive and 512mb ram.

The problem with Abiword is probably related to the lack of correct fonts. SliTaz only ships with one font set and when opening documents it defaults to it when the desired fonts isn't available. To get all the font sets present in SliTaz install the following packages: libsdl-ttf, ttf-bitstream-vera, ttf-dejavu-extra, droid-font and get-msttcorefonts - That should give you the majority of fonts you may need. You may also want to install abiword-plugins for a few extra functionalities
As for LibreOffice, maybe try the stand-alone version: http://sourceforge.net/projects/portable/files/LibreOffice%203.3/download

Really, the word "Slitaz worthless" is hard as I feel and frightening me because I'm two weeks years old in Slitaz Universe and do have such issues and more but one thing that I do believe that available in Slitaz and the community right here and it is: YOU WILL GET THE ANSWER. First by hard reading and searching inside the forum and docs. Second, to get help. But one best word of wisdon: be patient because there is no short way to get what you want.

Thanks for the replys even though I did not understand a word of the second one. If you are saying that SliTaz is not worthless without a working wordporcessor then that is fine if you don't need one but i do.
With regards to the reply from Trixar_za I have installed the packages listed and made sure all the abiword plugins are installed. It has made no difference, still total gibberish on the screen.
Downloaded the LibreOffice file in the link but what do I do with it now, as I said I am a SliTaz noobie and need a little more info.

Extract the archive (right click-->extract here) and run the program you want.
An example of the document that gets scrambled or screenshot would be helpful.

The issue is not only in Libreoffice package but also in bit torrent tool 'Transmission', when clicking on My Documents on the Desktop, all suddenly doesn't work. I guess it's a problem of lxpanel. Because after installing slitaz into HD and after first using and customizing such as resolution, installing libreoffice and other packages, then rebooting, I figured out that no configuration was saved or any package worked up. Please correct me if I'm wrong! I'll try to download libreoffice from sourceforge and try to convert the package using the convert tool in Slitaz and feeback accordingly asap.

You don't need to convert it because it's stand-alone as in everything it needs to run is included. You extract it, enter the directory and run the program you want. It needs no external dependencies except Java, but that's just to get the Wizards to work.
Your description of your problems is little vague. Closest guess with regards to the lack of persistence between sessions is that you may not have install SliTaz properly using the installer.
As for resolutions or screen settings, it may be that Xorg is defaulting to vesa. If you have the proper driver downloaded (use [c]tazx[/c] from the command line to download the right one), then remove xorg-xf86-video-vesa and reboot. Xorg should now configure itself to use the RIGHT video driver.

Trixar, could you throw a bit more light on this please. Been lucky so far with Xubuntu and Mint installing programmes but I appreciate I need to learn more to get the best out of SliTaz. Really want to use SliTaz since it makes my old laptop into a new one.

It's not that hard to understand nor is it unique to Linux, because you get stand-alone programs on Windows where you download it, unzip the files to a folder, go into the folder and run the exe file.
The process is exactly the same for the sourceforge version of LibreOffice, just right click--> extract here, enter the extracted directory and double click on writer to start it.
Don't confuse packages (which are like Windows programs that come with an installer) and stand-alone archives (which you unzip and run).

As promised an update.
All is working well, able to open .doc and .xls files reliably and edit both with no issues. I appreciate its an old version and a Beta at that but it works and that's all I need.
No issues downloading the file from Trixar's link but was mighty confused when I right clicked on the downloaded file to extract it, no such option. After a Google I discovered on the portable apps site that it was right click and make executable then double click to start. First time it started it said several times to install JRE but I never installed it and have never seen the message again, presume as Trixar said "everythings included".
So basically SliTaz does all I want to do on the old laptop at a brilliant speed compared to XP. Found a bug in Midori that makes it impossible for me to log out of E-Bay on my laptop but not an issue, I like Opera for a browser and have installed it, fine now.
Just Firewalls to get my head round now but I will start a new thread for that.

Just for share my tries, Abiword recognize for one professionnal (.doc) document, receveid by mail,
only 8 pages with 3 pages losss ( on a total of 11 pages expected ) .
I try what Trixar_za ( thank's again ) write about the fonts of Abiword :

These 2 solutions don't work here but hopelesly , the SliTaz community is great and this one above works :
as user root :
root@slitaz:~# tazpkg list-mirror | grep -i libreoffice
get-LibreOffice-1.2
after, just type
root@slitaz:~#get-LibreOffice-1.2
It takes about 2 hours ( 512 Mb RAM, Intel Pentium IV 1,9O GHz, HD 40 Go , Toshiba satellite 5200-711)
and the result is OK !
The document can be charged, read, modified with the 11 pages expected

Adenddum :
Finally, Abiword works fine for the document ( see upper comments ) by getting the additionnal package plugins :
abiword-plugins
( under root user in a sakura terminal, type : tazpkg -gi abiword-plugins )
Unfortunately, get-LibreOffice ( used to install LibreOffice ) was working but do not yet :
crash because /var/tmp was becoming on operation, unexpected as read / only file system ...
... and many tries to reinstall entirely SliTaz 4.0 ( kernel damaged after ) !
... that' s life and it's a good way to learn, so in conclusion at this date, dependind of your needs :
packages abiword & abiword-plugins works fine
get-LibreOffice do not at 100 % ( be careful, we all hope that it changes but be sure that is very difficult to maintain automatic packages with a lot of dependancies, containing sometimes non-free products, TOTAL RESPECT for the "Packager Team" )
