Hi SliTaz Forum,

A new Cooking have just reach the main mirror! It as a lot of new work and use our fresh and new packages builded on Tank with cookutils. You can find the official announce on the main website:

http://www.slitaz.org/en/#news

Direct download: http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/cooking/slitaz-cooking.iso

As usual we need your help and feedback to improve it and fix any bugs. Since we use a frozen wok (no update to main and important packages) from a while now and blending iso have been quiet well tested it is the last Cooking before RC series for next stabel 4.0 version.

Re: New Cooking 20110531

Arf... Difficult to help with a lspci. So the LiveCD boot ok with everthing working ? But only after install everthings break ? After install you can boot in text mode to access a tty and maybe try to debug that. To boot in text mode you must add an option to kernel command line (in Grub press 'e' to edit a entry) and add the option: screen=text

After booting to text mode you may start by looking to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d diretory content since the screen and keyboard setting for X are in there. You may also try to lauch 'tazx' in text mode to install Xorg ATI driver and then start Slim or 'startx'.

Re: New Cooking 20110531

Hi Pansko

Frugal + eee : boot well , looks like modules are loaded during boot time ..

.. but no .. no sound and no network working during X session

I've copy paste the bzimage, the vmlinuz and the rootfs.gz in the boot folder

Is it related with the fact that u moved the modules inside the rootfs.gz as

said in your announcement ?

Re: New Cooking 20110531

Hi,

the new cooking works well but:

1)there is the same issue of slitaz-blending with X that doesn't work with i915 and without xfree86-intel;

2)i couldn't see at the beginning italian locale option, but maybe it's normal smile

Re: New Cooking 20110531

Hi,

@moulefrite: Blending was ok no ? Modules was always in rootfs.gz as all the system. Does 'modprobe -l' list your module ? You can use grep to get the name: modprobe -l | grep modname. Also is alsamixer showing you sound card volume (they may be down, I just found a bug about missing /var/lib/alsa, this is where also store the sound card settings ?)

@Daniel: I finaly had to use xorg-server (the light version is nor ready) and if I dont put libdrm Xorg is very slow. But if we user light Xorg without any drm support it will not solve you problem ? We may have to create a new official flavor with all Xorg drivers and mesa ?

For Italian... my bad. I include all translated file but forgot to add glibc it_IT files so localedef can generate locale at boot. Here is the fix: http://hg.slitaz.org/wok/rev/2707984d98ec

Re: New Cooking 20110531

@pankso

if we used xorg without any drm support and without i915 i think there would be no problem, the problem i think is with xorg-server-libdrm-libdrm-intel-i915 and without: mesa,mesa-dri-intel,xorg-xf86-video-intel; i don't know if we used xorg without any drm support, but i can try.

Maybe a new flavor wouldn't be bad, or a ready to use pkg.

ok for italian.

Re: New Cooking 20110531

Hi,

/etc/group missing tux ??? I did not check that and not in users group, I'm right ? If it the case you may have pointed out the but for LiveUSB and FAT32 since we mount the key for tux:tux to make it writable.

Re: New Cooking 20110531

Hi

I noticed this when downloading mpd, ncmpcpp, etc.

Adding: tux:x:1000: to /etc/group fixes the packages when they install.

Re: New Cooking 20110531

Hi,

Frugal install on Thinkpad 600e (300MHz P2, neomagic video.) Does not boot into gui (same as 3.0 release & last cooking.) Works fine in command line mode, except tazx does not give any options except quit so I cannot configure the graphics card driver.

Also, trying to run tazinst fails with -m illegal option when using:

[c]tazinst cli -i -t iso -m slitaz-cooking.iso -p /dev/hda5 -f ext4[/c]

tried adding path to filename, same error

Frugal install by overwrite March 2011 cooking. Wow! Finest OS ever. All I ever wanted. Tried them all - Linux & MS. Instant everything. A miracle of perfection. Went to D/L packages. Locked up. Re: New Cooking 20110531

Update on thinkpad 600e:

tazinst worked using a config file. Continues to fail using cli, -m illegal option

once installed I ran tazx OK. Seems it requires network access, and wireless wasn't setup yet. tazx worked installing the driver but did not modify the xorg.conf.d scripts correctly, same as old cooking. After manually editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-Devices.conf to reflect correct video driver and rebooting X worked. Reboot was required because startx didn't work and it was quicker than troubleshooting what was running that was in the way.

once X worked I had trouble with tazpanel. First I struggled with the username/password issue. Once I resolved that I tried to recharge then update. Recharge seemed to work but update failed to download files and showed keycodes rather than characters (e.g. "%2" rather than "/")

Re: New Cooking 20110531

last post con't:

tazpkg works fine, upgrades 11 packages fine. Still get tazpkg errors e.g. can't create upgradable-packages.list-processed, still doesn't seem to matter.

After upgrade packages system asking me to choose the sound card on every boot. I am not sure it that happened before upgrading alsa. Still working on solution. Sound does work fine though, just like every distro the ac97 tries to load and fails, but the proper driver does load and works fine.

Still need to test grfxpayload= in grub2. This thinkpad is booting using grub2, but I currently have it configured with the deprecated vga= format as has been required to date. I really hope this feature gets into this version.

Wireless doesn't work. broadcom driver gives unrecognized phy error. Also tried 2 other usb radios, both fail. realtek driver crashes. zd1211rw driver loads but also fails to connect to network. The zw1211rw device is flaky but usually works, the other 2 always work. All 3 work in antiX installed in another partition. Also when wireless is set to yes wired network doesn't work. Interface eth0 becomes listed as a woreless interface and doesn't get configured. Another feature that is really important that slitaz does not have is support for multiple network cards. Even a wired and wireless interface both configured on the same machine causes problems.

tazpkg recharge/upgrade again, 3 more packages. No longer asks to configure sound.

Impressions so far:

The good/great:

Overall seems to feel slightly less responsive than previous cooking but is it just as fast as before. Like the new look, starting to look polished. Tazpanel seems like a good change. No udev errors!!

The bad/ugly:

Wish the password for the tazpanel app would update with the install script at least. support for multiple net interfaces, at least one wired one wireless, but there should be an easy way to have more than one of each. Reconfigure xorg requires network if the gui does not come up. Difficult to configure wireless without gui, so wired network usually required to fix xorg drivers before wireless can be configured, then wired network will no longer work, whether wireless configuration works or not. If wireless fails, must be disabled to reenable wired ethernet.

---

to be continued...

su

tazpkg get-install get-flash-plugin && get-flash-plugin

it seem tazpanel does not execute second get-flash-plugin

Also, trying to run tazinst fails with -m illegal option when using:

tazinst cli -i -t iso -m slitaz-cooking.iso -p /dev/hda5 -f ext4

There's a bug in tazinst usage, the option for Source media is -s, so the command should be:

tazinst cli -i -t iso -s slitaz-cooking.iso -p /dev/hda5 -f ext4

Re: New Cooking 20110531

"any answer to my asus eeepc 901 start problem?

Thanks"

yep, same on my eee .  Either the screen is just black , either it has something messy where you can

just see some horizontal movements of your mouse.

I've always said that a basic xvesa flavor could be the the most compatible way for the first step , than

a optional second step include a Xorg+Configuration-driver with an auto-uninstall of Xvesa

For the problem, I can say that before I done a full Live Usb (which doen't work) I had done before just a replacement of the rootfs.gz with the new one : it leads to have a graphic session but with no modules working

(no sound, no ethernet connection)

Re: New Cooking 20110531

Attempted install of wicd to resolve wifi issues. wicd installed but wicd-gtk would not accept any root password (correct one, "root", user password, empty). su to root and wicd-gtk fails with python errors.

still no wifi.

jtouso & moulefrite:

When you boot to black screen usually it is a graphics problem. You may be able to boot the machine with screen=text on kernel command line. Or, can you get to a text console (ctr-alt-f1) from the blank screen? If you can, and you have a network connection, you can then run tazx to change the graphics driver.

Re: New Cooking 20110531

Ctrl+alt+f1 don´t have any answer.

Reboot again with screen=text arrives to login but ...how can I connect to internet to run tazx?

May I put any order on kernel command line at the boot ?
