testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

Hello everyone,

Improvement request? Bug? Anyway, I wanted to post this since I regularly use slitaz. Basically, installing testdisk through tazpanel does not enable support for the NTFS filesystem by default.

If you install and run testdisk then select a Windows drive through testdisk, there is a 'P' option to list files from NTFS partitions. This results in the error:

"Support for this filesystem hasn't been enabled during compilation."

To enable NTFS support in testdisk, you must compile testdisk to include ntfsprogs. From what I can tell slitaz already comes with ntfsprogs installed. So, if it's already installed why not just enable it? NTFS is a common filesystem, so can it just be enabled please? It can't hurt. Anyone else agree?

Thanks!

Re: testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

Never noticed this since I converted over the debian package off the site than the one provide by SliTaz. But yes, the support should have been compiled in and it wasn't.

Re: testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

Hi trixar_za,

Just wondering, do I need to do anything special to have something like this looked at so that it can eventually be corrected? Like fill out a form or anything?

Thanks

Re: testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

The simplest solution is to go to http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download and download the Linux 32bit Beta version. Just extract it, enter the folder, open a terminal window (if not in the directory, cd towards it) and type ./testdisk_static or ./photorec_static to run them.

Re: testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

Hi,

Can you check http://mirror.slitaz.org/packages/cooking/testdisk-6.13.tazpkg ?

It should support ntfs http://hg.slitaz.org/wok/rev/91a13c17b446

http://cook.slitaz.org/cooker.cgi?pkg=testdisk

Hi Bellard,

That's exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks so much!

Re: testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

I am creating a new build from scratch and I see that downloading testdisk from the package manager (via tazpanel) still downloads the old version, which does NOT have ntfs support. Also, the link above that Bellard provided is dead. As you can see this was a long time ago. So, when is testdisk going to be updated (with ntfs) so that it's easily available for download through tazpanel?

Thanks

Re: testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

hi, i'm a little bit lazy this week but i should work on testdisk because i upgraded ntfs-3g and it seems that now ntfsprogs it's directly based on ntfs-3g:

http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-download/

so i think that ntfsprogs should be wanting ntfs-3g and ntfsprogs-dev should disappear ( @bellard, would it be ok? ) and i should check gparted, partclone and testdisk too because they depends on ntfs-3g or ntfsprogs or both. but as i told this week i'm a little bit lazy with pc and i'm busy with some other extra work, hope to check all this during week end.

forgive me but i come from a full immersion month and i need a little bit of rest.

Re: testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

It should be in SliTaz Cooking's repository now.

Re: testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

hthreat seems to be right:

http://cook.slitaz.org/cooker.cgi?pkg=testdisk

look for

configure: WARNING: Use of ntfs library disabled

i'll try to fix it during week-end, unless someone else want to do it before :-)

Re: testdisk and ntfsprogs problem

I managed to find an old iso where I installed the one I got using Bellard's link and then ran tazpkg repack to grab it. It gave me some md5sum errors but I got around those. So, in the mean time I am good to go but it would be very nice to just have a stable version available that's compiled with ntfs support through pkg manager. I did also try this one http://mirror.slitaz.org/packages/cooking/testdisk-6.14.tazpkg, which works but seems to be beta version according to cgsecurity.org.

Thanks and hope it can be fixed soon!
