Missing BOOTMGR

I am new to linux and have decided to use slitaz on a desktop.  I could boot from the CD but when I tried to install to the disk I got the massage "BOOTMGR missing". I was trying to install in one partition /dev/hda1 which was formatted to ext3.  I think that wipes out the boot area on the disk.

I couldn't find clear instructions on how to setup the disk, so this is what I did.

I reformatted the disk (8GB) using a winXP cd.  I selected R for repair and at the DOS prompt used the FORMAT command with  NTFS as the file system.

Then when istalling slitaz I made a second partition of 7.7GB and formatted that as EXT3 leaving the first partition NTFS.

Installing slitaz to the second partition worked fine.

Please comment on what might be the correct way to set up a HD for installation of slitaz.

Re: Missing BOOTMGR

"BOOTMGR missing" is a winxp/vista/win7 error because MS code is still on the hard disk's master boot record

and you've erased the bootfiles it pointed to when you formated the partitions.

Why not install slitaz to first partition on drive?

Are you attempting to make a dual boot windows slitaz setup with winxp on /dev/hda1 formated in ntfs and slitaz linux on /dev/hda2 formated ext3 ?

You have to install grub bootloader to MBR to chainload windows or boot slitaz.

Whatever your plan never install slitaz to a partition formated in a microsoft filesystem ie. ntfs,fat32,fat16.

Use the slitaz-installer on the livecd to format install target partition with ext3 filesystem , install slitaz, and install grub bootloader to MBR.

Re: Missing BOOTMGR

OK, but what did you do exactly?

What are partitions on HD, system(s) installed... ?
