upgrade to new stable kernel 3.6.1

Hey guys,

i would like to upgrade the kernel of my Slitaz 4.0 install for better hardware support.

i'm not much a fan of compiling drivers and modules, since i'm not a linux expert on those things.

Is there an understandable tutorial out there in the forum? I didn't found it so far...

Or should i keep my hands off it? :-)

I would say good luck with that. It's a little more complicated than that guide points out. Would probably be a better idea to switch to SliTaz Cooking.

I can't find out which kernel version the cooking iso has?

By the way, i decided to use slitaz for a new nfs/samba/ftp server.

Let me see if I can't update the kernel on my own box today.  If I can I'll explain here how to do it.  I'm sure it's more than the guide says and I'm sure it's not easy.  It's linux

But it will be fun.  Going slow will ensure I don't fry my system.

Ah I've made no promises, but let me go cut my grass and I'll come back in and give it a go.  If anyone wants to give advice in the next hour so I don't fry my system please do because I'm an expert at that

Progress so far:  I've attempted to download the kernel and even finding the specific version in cooking is hard to do.  If someone could direct me to a package I could download it so I can give it a go.

I've followed the guide up til

tazpkg get-install linux-source

but it downloads

linux-2.6.37.tar.bz2

from kernel.org

so that needs to be updated if we are going to run off of the 3.2.14 kernel, but admittedly I don't know how to do that, and that's not why I'm here, and am in no way suggesting anyone needs to hop on that project by any means.

Taking a break and I'll get back to it ASAP

Hi

Last year, I did a work like this with Tiny Core Linux (a light-weight distro). I patched a newer version of kernel (with rt-preemet, a real-time patch for kernel) and make it and replace it successfully. It's a little hard but is possible, and yes, amazing.

These are steps I suggest:

- Download the newer version of kernel.

- Find the configuration of current kernel of SliTax 4.0 and cofig the newer version according to it (important).

- Make the kernel, install it, the header files and kernel modules.

each of the steps explained in multiple websites and can be done with a bit of try-error.
