New PC and... black screen at boot

Hello,

Back to SliTaz after a few weeks out of home.

Probably most of you would have been happy if their boss gave them a new PC. Yes but... unable to with boot SliTaz 4! As well as from a Live than installed on an USB stick. Black screen immediately after loading the module for graphic card (Intel HD Graphic 3000). Only SliTaz base works.

The PC is a FUJITSU lifebook S 752. I tested SliTaz 4 on a S 751 and curiously it runs fine. The only difference I found between the two models is the speed of the processors: 2.4 GHz for S752, 2.1 for S751 ???

I wanted to test it with cooking but I just find an iso dated 2011/05/31; no other cooking from this date ? This one does'nt run too.

Re: New PC and... black screen at boot

Hi Mojo,

Thanks for answer. A little better: I can choose langage an keyboard now but then the system stops with message

error setting MTRR (base = 0xe0000000, size 0x03ff0000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)

Re: New PC and... black screen at boot

On some hardware the language and keyboard dialogs will lockup xorg.

Try adding lang=en_US and kmap=us after nomodeset so the dialogs are bypassed.

Re: New PC and... black screen at boot

hmm... no, same message.

I tried with old versions. 2.0 and 3.0Xvesa work fine excepted the ethernet (need module e1000e). I'll download it tomorrow. I'd like to have a SliTaz's version running before to leave again.

Well, "it's already tomorrow" as said my daughter when she was young. I'm going to go to bed a few hours.

Re: New PC and... black screen at boot

I agree with you, cooking ISO file is too old (according to http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/cooking/). This is confusing, because developers are working almost every day on the cooking wok (http://hg.slitaz.org/?sort=lastchange).

In my opinion Slitaz's developers change the name "cooking" for "rolling" and forgot to update the link. Only my guess...

Anyway, you can download the fresh ISO from here:

http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/rolling/

Happy slitaz

PS: It would be nice if a developer could explain us the situation about cooking/rolling and update the link to download the cooking/rolling ISO file. ;-)

Re: New PC and... black screen at boot

I am no developer, but the rolling iso is built evry day with the last changes - and a cooking is one selected rolling iso, which is generally working to test for all.

I have tried three rolling iso, which did not boot at all - I found one, that was booting 4. September - I have uploaded here - you can try this, if the actual does not work

http://www.kult-ex.org/download/slitaz-rolling.iso

there have been quite a lot of changes in the meantime

until now, there exists no cooking for 5.0

@ totoetsasoeur + kultex

Thanks for links and thes precisions. I'm going to dowload rollings and test them on my hadware.

@ mojo

I suppose I was a little tired this night. I tried again with lang=en_US and kmap=us  and the PC boots but only in console mode.

Re: New PC and... black screen at boot

I forgot to say, that the language selection on the rolling iso I have uploaded does not work - so just go to the first line on the first boot screen.

and in general, if you have troubles with X its good to add on the boot promt screen=text

because after logging in as tux, you can install Midnight Commander by typing as root

tazpkg get-install mc

and after going back to tux and starting X with

startx

its much easier to debug by analysing /var/log/Xorg0.log

Re: New PC and... black screen at boot

This post from core Live with kultex's rolling iso and with nomodeset after autologin to have a correct display. It'll be good in a first time; I can have SliTaz with me when I'll travel.

Rolling iso from http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/rolling/ does not boot correctly on this PC (black screen in all cases).

I'm going to test regularly new rollings.

Re: New PC and... black screen at boot

Found a way that works every time for me with LiveUSB 4.0:

at orange boot menu, select SliTaz core Live and press [Tab]

add nomodeset before autologin (if after, does not work) and screen=text at the end of the line, after the home=.............................

hit [enter]

choose your language

choose your keymap

(easier to log and type commands but keymap will come back to US after X will start)

log as tux and then type startx

This is a mix of mojo's and kultex's instructions; we could call it the moltex (or kujo) method :-)

I tried it with the rolling of the day but it doesn't work each boot; system often hangs with message "searching sound cards" that totoetsasoeur signaled
