Hello.
I am quite stubborn and before asking for help, I would study, test and browse flat out.
I installed Slitaz on a Pentium III, 700 MHz, 768 MB, a good AGP video card and it went well: I managed to have a splendid 1600 x 1050 resolution starting from the default 800 x 600.
Happy with that I proceeded to install Slitaz on a Pentium MMX, 233 MHz, 256 MB, and a PCI video card.
Stated that on a different partition of the same computer, there is Puppy Linux 3.01 running at 1024 x 768 with both cards (clearly I tried once at a time), I can not figure out why in case of:
a) ATI Rage II+, I got a poor 832 x 624 and
b) S3 Virge, I could not hop from the default 800 x 600.
I spent more than 24 hours figuring out why that happened but in the end I gave up.
So, I beg for some wise advice.
I tried what I found described on the Slitaz forum (and that is how I managed to get the 1600 x 1050 on the Pentium III).

Have you run tazx from Sakura as root and select the right video driver for the video card you're using?

List of my actions:
01) sakura;
02) su;
03) [typed the root password];
04) tazhw detect-pci;
05) tazx;
06a) S3 driver (in case of S3 Virge);
06b1) ATI (in case of ATI Rage II+);
06b2) Mach (as a last resort since at the BIOS boot up in the screen there is displayed the ATI logo and something like Mach64 followed by some numbers and letters);
Since that came to no result, I also tried the following:
07) tazpkg get-install xorg-xf86-video-ati
08) tazpkg get-install xorg-xrandr
09) tazpkg get-install lxrandr.tazpkg
10) tazhw setup ati
Sometimes, the system replied that the module were already installed and if I really want to install them I must "force" a reinstallation. I never resorted to this option.
Do you think that I should tweak the /etc/X11/xorg.conf so the add the 1024 x 768 at depth 16?
I have two more question for you (and I hope you would not be bothered):
1) why after typing tazhw detect-pci, the output seems to state that there is no pci module installed (maybe it is just that ...)?
2) why after completing tazx, the prompt states that the configuration file is /root/xorg.config.new (or something like that. I am sorry but at present I am not at home and I am trying to recall what I read) but the reality is that there is not such file? I even created a blank file with that name to verify if it is updated after running tazx one more time.
Anyway, when I will be back home, I will get a new try to see if I can improve the resolution. Having a 800 x 600 is cumbersome (perhaps my old auntie will appreciate it ...)

Try removing xorg-xf86-video-vesa and restarting the machine. This will force Xorg to use the other driver.
At the moment tazx is only used to install the right drivers since xorg mostly auto-configures itself. This may change in future versions.
You're right about maybe having to force the resolution with xorg's conf files. There are a few guide on the forum on how to do it. I'll find them for you when I'm at my PC (I'm posting from my phone).

After 3 hours of attempts, I had to give up because I need to sleep.
I think that there is some issues upon how the tazx works.
I saw that in the 60-device... file, the driver is "vesa" even if I selected "s3" in tazx.
I removed xorg-xf86-video-vesa and even if I modified the screen file so to have the s3 driver, the system is unable to launch the graphic-mode.
In short,
a) it seems that the system is not able to load the s3 driver;
b) this failure is explained referring to some "inet6" and something else. I must be quick enough to read what is displayed on the screen before it it swept away by succeeding lines.
Hmm, it is strange.This night I am trying again and I want to write down what is written in the screen to explain why the "s3" driver is not loaded.

Another note: after tweaking again and again the configuration file, it seems that the system is unable to boot the graphic environment because
1) Parse error on line 1 of section "Screen" in file /etc/X11/xorg.config.d/70-Screen.conf
2) "Section" is not a valid keyword in this section
3) fatal server error: no screens found
4) Openbox-Messafe: failed to open the display from the DISPLAY environment variable.
5) (yad:1153): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: 0.0
For the sake of completeness, if I type $DISPLAY then return, the output is :0.0
Hmm, I wonder why Section is not a valid keyword.
