Dear guys,
The application I am working on right now is targetted, among other countries, to Maroc.
It means it must show Arabic texts in the screen, properly drawn & from right to left.
Apart from adding extra locales to switch among when needed, what do you suggest for the end user experience to be as smooth as expected?

Arabic L10N: locale + fonts + keyboard layout switcher + IM (input method)
I think there is no problem with web browsing. Do you see arabic RTL (right-to-left) textes in the Wikipedia page?

It seems like we can write Arabic in the text editors like LeafPad and Geany (I copy-pasted sentence from Wikipedia).
Seems like XTerm can't work with RTL scripts; little copy-paste again:
[c]echo "أنا أحب القراءة"[/c]
XTerm will print it backwards (LTR).
About fonts. I have fonts with Arabic scripts:
[c]fc-list :lang=ar[/c]
Here are:

Hello,
I resurrected this old post I found by searching on the forum about arabic language. Oatta, a new comer, would like to have arabic language and arabic keyboard on his SliTaz 4.0.
I tried to boot with [c]lang=ar[/c] and I saw that the Applications menu was after written in arabic language but that's all. Of course some texts must be changed in .desktop files and probably still otherwhere but I didn't find the way to have an arabic keyboard. Can someone help me on this? and how to switch easily from arabic to AZERTY keyboard?

merci d'avoir parlé de ce sujet . par l'habitude on change la langue sur Windows en touchant alt+shift , et nous avons la possibilité d'installer la langue arabe par le cd Windows . ceel nous cherchons l'arabe comme outil de recherche ça veut dire : d'avoir l'arabe sur le clavier ,et lorsque je voudrai chercher sur Google sur un sujet en arabe je n'ai qu'a taper en arabe. thank you for talking about this. by habit you change the language on Windows with touching alt + shift, and we can install the Arabic language by the Windows cd. ceel we seek Arabic as a research tool. it means: to have the Arabic keyboard, and when I want a Google search on a topic in Arabic I can simply type in Arabic. and thank you

It seems that I managed to solve your problem. Please, download and install next brand new packages:
[*]locale-ar-4.1.tazpkg — Arabic translations for many applications, time zone info, locale definition files, icons for keyboard layouts, country flags.
[*]slitaz-menus-2.4.1.tazpkg — in the version 2.4.1 Arabic menu categories was added.
Next. Click Applications menu → Preferences → System language. Select your Arabic locale and click OK. Now log out and log in back.
Now keyboard. Right click on LXPanel, add keyboard applet. Configure it: uncheck "Keep system defaults", add "ara | digits" layout, change layout switcher to "alt_shift_toggle", check "Remember layout for window", close. Thats all. Now you can open your web browser, and google in Arabic.
Alternatively, you can setup your keyboard using this command line (this solution takes effect until next shut up / reboot):
[c]setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us,ar -variant ,digits -option grp:alt_shift_toggle[/c]
And I need your feedback!

With SliTaz 4.0 things seem a bit different than on Rolling.
After having select your arabic language and log out / log in, for keyboard, right click on the LXPanel bar, add "Sélecteur de disposition du clavier". Then double click on "Sélecteur de disposition du clavier" in the Panel Applets tab and choose your Disposition par défaut (FR(?) or ARA).
Change keyboard from one to the other by clicking on the upper left symbol in the LXPanel bar or with [Alt] + [Shift]

Merci ceel et Aleksej; pour votre temps et efforts fournis sur slitaz . Enfin, j'ai pu me naviguer sur l'internet en utilisant ma langue native (arabe + berber). Mon intérêt non dans le changement de la langue du système mais d'avoir tous les outils nécessaires à une recherche fructueuse. Ceel, j'avais eu des difficultés sur ceci : in the Panel Applets tab and choose your Disposition par défaut (FR(?) or ARA).

Ceel thank you and Aleksej; for your time and efforts on slitaz. Finally, I was able to navigate on the internet using my native language (Arabic + berber). My interest in not changing the system language but have all the tools necessary for successful research. Ceel, I had difficulties on this: in the Panel Applets tab and choose your Default Layout (FR () or ARA?). Change keyboard from one to the other by clicking close on the upper left symbol in the LXPanel gold bar with [Alt] + [Shift]. but the command of Aleksej has saved me. Deux méthodes :
[*]Tu cliques sur Applications > Préférences > Langage ; tu es invité à entrer le mot de passe de root et tu choisis la langue que tu veux. Tu dois faire un log out / log in pour que le changement prenne effet.
[*]À partir d'un terminal root, tape
[c]tazlocale[/c]
et choisis dans la liste qui s'affiche ; là encore, log out / log in pour que le changement soit effectif
Pour le choix du clavier par défaut, un petit dessin vaut mieux qu'un long discours ;-)
Les affichages sont en anglais parce que c'est la langue que j'utilise par défaut sur SliTaz, c'est plus facile pour le forum.
