google chrome install

hey guys.

im sorry if i ask too much on this forum but i just experience a lot of problems with slitaz.

i tried to install google chrome.

i first tried to install it using:

>tazpkg get-install get-google-chrome

>get-google-chrome

it sais:

Connecting to dl.google.com (173.194.65.93:80)

wget: server returned error: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found

Could not download google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb. Exiting.

so then i download the .deb from chrome.google.com

i converted it to tazpkg using:

>tazpkg convert "google-chrome.deb" (i renamed the file)

no errors

installed the tazpkg

all OK

but now how should i run it?

i cant find an executable somewhere logical.

any help is much appreciated

Re: google chrome install

Hi jjk,

I'm not at the computer now. Start search chrome executable at the location /opt/...

Debian packages not suitable for SliTaz. Chrome installed into /opt instead of /usr/bin, /usr/lib and /usr/share. I converted chrome too about a couple of weeks ago. I remember, you need cups installed, and make several soft links to existing libraries. Maybe, add /opt/... to PATH.

Debug chrome by running it in terminal.

Fixed, works on 4.0 and cooking:

http://mirror.slitaz.org/packages/cooking/get-google-chrome-1.03.tazpkg

[c]# tazpkg install get-google-chrome-1.03.tazpkg --forced[/c]

[c]# get-google-chrome[/c]

Re: google chrome install

And that comment was helpful how? I recently used get-flash-plugin (as in 2 days ago) and it downloaded and installed perfectly fine. BUT it crashed Midori and TazWeb and refused to work with Firefox. Clearly this is the fault of the plugin and NOT SliTaz. Please refrain from commenting unless you can add something helpful to the discussion.

Also FYI: Try http://www.trixarian.net/downloads/flash-11.1.102.63.tazpkg which is older and more compatible or http://trixarian.net/downloads/flash-plugin.tazpkg which is newer (but not the newest). Both INCLUDE the actual file and isn't a downloader script.

Re: google chrome install

can you tell me whats better about firefox, chrome is fast, secure, has builtin flash, you have your settings on every pc, easy to install extensions.

what else do you want.

and btw midori is just too unknown, it has no extensions and its much too hard to get things working in it.

take that tongue

Re: google chrome install

Hi jjk,

Default brouser is a complex term.

Some scripts use browser as web browser (open terminal and type [c]browser[/c]).

You can change it in next way: right click on your desktop → Favorite Applications → Configure favorites → change field "Web browser" (to [c]chrome[/c] or [c]google-chrome[/c]—actually I don't know) and press Change. Now again open terminal and again type [c]browser[/c], is Chrome started?

But several scripts/apps have hardcoded browsers in it, and you can't change them without knowing & googling.

Additionally, you can set your system up to open local html pages in your browser. Open PCManFM, find local saved html page, right click on it → Properties → Open with → select your browser and close dialog by pressing Ok, Ok…

Re: google chrome install

Chrome is bloated, no element blocking for ads (meaning you still download the ads even if you have an adblocker installed) and huge. Not to mention it's updates tend to use the newest requirements which also breaks it often. And the only reason they have built in flash is because they got Adobe to sign an exclusive deal with google. So much for "Don't be evil"

Firefox on the other hand provides it's own upgradable stand-alone package that works on just about any system. It's also smaller than Chrome and element blocking DOES work. Not to mention the 200 000+ extensions in existence for it...

Re: google chrome install

The main concern with Adobe Flash Player is a history full of security holes, I certainly don't want to have Flash integrated in any Web browser.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Flash#Flash_client_security

I just don't use it.

Re: google chrome install

@jjk

it's a question of ethic. Whatever chrom is good technique, an in-build activity tracker in a browser is not compatible with linux and a better world philosophy. It's just my opinion ;p

Re: google chrome install

Certainly Trixar did win the race with his arguements....

however we are just a bit Googleaholic...

Chrome wouldnt have been there if it wasnt about Google's Services...:)

Re: google chrome install

However, if one needs to use flash, what would be the way to have an up to date flash player?  My browser needs the most recent shokewave flash for work purposes.  How do I go about intalling one in Firefox?

Re: google chrome install

@ Mojo   Thanks for the link.  I had already downloaded and "installed" the flash both from adobe and the one from your link.  However, when I chech for plugins in firefox and seamonkey, it indicates that it does NOT have any plugins. I even downloaded lightspark. So, once again, I have no idea what I am doing wrong.  Should I sweep clean the installs and start all over again? Thanks in advance for any clues.  //

Ahh, can anybody explain, or confirm, that when I downloaded and installed google chrome what I actually got was seamonkey?  Yes, seamonkey.  I tried to re-install it but it said: "google chrome is already installed." I thought google chrome was a completely different web browser.  So, is this a hoax or something funny happened?
