Cannot install anything

Hi, I'm relatively new to SliTaz.  I've googled to no end about solutions for installing packages using Slitaz Installer, but for some reason it cannot find rootfs.gz even though that same file was created.  I'm running this GNU/Linux cooking OS on a Windows XP version 5.1 build 2600 and the current version of Slitaz I'm using is Linux 2.6.29.3-slitaz (i686).

Re: Cannot install anything

You're using SliTaz aircrack-ng which is based on a version of cooking older than SliTaz 3.

This causes a whole host of issues because your using an older kernel than SliTaz 3 or the Latest cooking, and it's too new for SliTaz 2's packages. The same issue comes up with the version of the packages installed on your system.

Simply put? It would just be easier to download and install SliTaz 3 and install the aircrack-ng package from the repository.

The installer will need an ext3 partition to install SliTaz on your system and may not run well on an NTFS partition, although it's possible using a frugal or using a virtual machine emulator.

Once on SliTaz 3, installing it and packages should be easier.

Re: Cannot install anything

I apologize deeply for this, but I am a complete novice when it comes to things like this.  I've downloaded Slitaz-3.0.iso and am completely lost as to what to do next.  Insult me, ridicule me, troll me, just as long as one of the previous choices leads to an actual solution.

Re: Cannot install anything

Generally no matter how good somebody is with computers or other OSes, when they first started with Linux, they were novices at it. Which is why I only really flame people that demand support like they paid for SliTaz. Otherwise I see no point in chasing away potential users.

First we need to figure out what you want out of SliTaz. Do you want to run it on Windows (You can using a program like QEMU or VMWare) or do you want to install it on your system along side Windows (You'll need to create a separate partition for this or resize the one you already have)?

Re: Cannot install anything

I installed Slitaz 3.0 and don't have the problems I had before, merely an entirely new plethora of them.  I'm running it off a Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 but I'm also getting the "Failed to execute login command".  I've had rare moments of success where hitting F1 and seeing "session: openbox" will log me in.  Otherwise nothing.  And I'm using LiveUSB.  And thank you for being so understanding.  You will never hear me demand anything, because quite frankly, Slitaz doesn't need to do jack for anyone.
