Slitaz 4 failing to boot

When I boot the live CD of Slitaz 4 it eventually reaches a prompt and I log in as user root pw root. I then type startx and get the message Fatal server error. Some other text and (yad1606)**cannot open display. It is a Panasonic cf27 laptop and has a Neomagic graphics chip. Can someone help please. I normally use Slitaz 3.0 which works well on this laptop. Thank you.

Re: Slitaz 4 failing to boot

Thanks for your reply KULTEX. I tried as you suggested. tazx gives me 2 options, xorg and xfbdev. X org does not work. xfbdev I beleive wants to download from the web. However there is no ethernet socket on this laptop at all and I connect to the net via a wireless card for which I need the system running. Catch 22. Do you have any other ideas please.

Re: Slitaz 4 failing to boot

If you can get hold of the packages.iso then insert the dvd and point Tazpanel to use the DVD instead of normal download. This way you should be able to install the wireless card drivers to get the Internet connection going. Packages.iso will also have the neomagic driver so hopefully both your problems can be fixed this way.

Re: Slitaz 4 failing to boot

@gdesilva, where can I find packages.iso?

@terrybull, if you are able to get hold of packages.iso, then @gdesilva's suggestion is probably the quickest and simplest.

Else, you can go to pkgs.slitaz.org and download specific packages (bear in mind though, they may/will have dependencies, which can make it quite painful).

Packages.iso can be found at http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/slitaz/iso/4.0/packages-4.0.iso

Re: Slitaz 4 failing to boot

@terrybull, hope you are feeling better! Although I have installed packages using the packages.iso DVD, I haven't done a full install using the DVD. However, it appears all you have to do is to mount the DVD (you can get pcmanfm to automount it for you by clicking on the DVD drive) and start Tazpanel-> Packages -> Administration -> Slitaz Packages DVD. I would guess all that is needed is to specify the path of the mounted DVD and click 'Install from DVD/USB key' option. May be someone who has actually done the installation this way can confirm this or you can just give it a go.

EDIT : checkout the following link for details http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/how-to-install-packages-without-internet-connection - specific instructions are given in mojo's post towards the end of this thread.

Re: Slitaz 4 failing to boot

Thanks for taking the time to reply gdesilva. The problem is I cannot get a working system. Running the live CD I get to a prompt and there I am stuck. Tazx obviously looks to the internet but I do not have one for reasons explained above. I am quite happy with Slitaz 3 but it would be nice to have V4 running.

Thanks

Re: Slitaz 4 failing to boot

@terrybull, my apologies - did not read all the details of the earlier posts. Here is a suggestion....

1. boot with liveCD

2. when you get to the logon prompt login as root

3. Mount the packages.iso DVD

4. cd to packages-4.0/packages/4.0 directory of the mounted DVD

5. you should be able to see all the packages in this directory

6. from here install the packages you need by running tazpakg install <pkgname>

7. watch out for missing dependencies and if there are any missing packages install them separately.

The way I would approach this problem is to install just the packages that are needed to get your wireless connection going first. Once wireless drivers are installed, edit /etc/network.conf as required and run '/etc/init.d/network.sh start' to start up the wireless network. When wlan0 is up then you should be able to run tazx command to install the neomagic driver to make sure all dependencies are taken care of.
