Hi everyone,
I'm just trying to get a live cd booting on a laptop with 128mb of RAM
just so you know i'm a total noob to linux, been using mac for over 10 years and amiga b4 that
ive got the cd burnt, it boots but gets to a point when it asks for a user log in name then a password
this isnt a gui looking thing, its white text on a black screen, command prompt like.
ive tried a number of user names and passwords but it always tells me that the user name is incorrect
ive tried user - tux, hacker, root, user
with no password and also root and the above user names in all combinations
any suggestions?

You need atleast 160MB of RAM to boot the normal 3.0 LiveCD, which is probably why it's not working. This means you rather should try the loram flavor that uses a little less RAM to boot off a CD. You can find it @ http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/stable/flavors/ - note it's just the default LiveCD has such a high memory requirement, but once installed it barely uses 30MB RAM to run idle and boot.
