Today, I was trying to install Slitaz on my 160 GB HDD (I know, too big) from my USB stick , but after restarting GRUB failed.
It shown this message: "No bootable device - insert boot disk". I tried installing from CD and ISO file, but nothing.
Also I can't edit any files on my hard drive. What is happening?
I am guessing this is an internal hdd
if you cant edit any file on the hdd then look for a hw problem with the disk or accessing the disk.
The first message is really saying the grub is not found on the hdd (the title says grub fails to boot, but this is wrong, grub is not found at all on the disk)
I would boot from the stick/cd and make sure i have access to the disk. Use gparted for example and recreate a 4GB partition, then install from then on
If gparted does not see the disk at all then check all the connections (physical connections) to the drive; eventually if you can plug in another drive.

Yes, it is internal, and sorry for the mistake.
I created a 4 GB partition, then reinstalled Slitaz. Now HD write/read operations work. But GRUB gives the same error. I checked devices.map and menu.lst but no errors.
With Gparted, verify that the boot flag on your 4GB partition is set to on.

It was not set. It looks that the Installer forgot to set the boot flag to to on.
Now everything works!
