support for broad range of hardware

Looking through the forum, I see that a lot of people have problems configuring wifi and are having to download drivers, firmware, etc. Personally, I've used slitaz for a long time using a livecd and like how fast it is. But, periodically I have problems with certain hardware, mostly wifi, sometimes graphics, sometimes sound. In fact, I've always just stuck to using hardwired connections since the wifi is a pain.

So, I would like to know if it's even possible to have a slitaz livecd that supports a lot of hardware (old and new) without having to always lookup hardware on individual machines in order to then download and configure what's needed? I don't install slitaz on a hard drive so I am not looking to customize/configure slitaz for just 1 machine. I want to be able to run the livecd or liveusb across many machines and have it work as best as possible on all. In a way, like ubuntu or windows where it can recognize most hardware and get it working with at least basic drivers. Is there additional packages that I can install so that at boot time slitaz is able to recognize more hardware? Or, am I just crazy and this is not possible? For example, having a livecd that I can load on practically any laptop and have the wifi work would be awesome.

Also, I know slitaz is running on an older kernel. Is that part of it? Do newer versions of linux kernels support more hardware? Or, how can I tell from one distro to the next which one generally speaking has better hardware support? Thanks for any advice!
