Pentium III runs way too slow? - meets requirements, sys-report

Hi, this is my first post here and I have installed slitaz 4.0 on an older computer:

Pentium III, 600 MHz, 256MB ram, 20GB HDD, motherboard is a M748LMRT with onboard SiS shared graphics.

Anything I do in the GUI environment is just really slow. tazpanel and browser takes forever to load and scroll within.

Everything else in the GUI is slow as well, like pcfm, sysinfo.

I fairly certain I have the correct graphics driver installed for my SiS 620 chip.

I'm going to try to attach the sys-report.html. If I cannot attach it I'll paste it here. (resolv.conf is edited to not show address in the forum)

I think it would go faster if your ram + swap = 1gb

(I think it is probably having to swap too much out & in)

Thank you for your quick reply, I resized my swap partition to 768mb

768+256=1024mb. I cannot tell if anything speeded up. tazpanel still takes minutes to open, and listing my pkgs installed takes about 3-5 minutes, I didn't time it.

Would the 8mb used by my onboard video effect this?

if you can try slitaz 2.0 to get a feeling of what it could be.

I have a 256M 1.2Ghz Celeron laptop, 2.0 runs fine and sticked to it since was unhappy with 3.0 performance. (not enough ram to run happily, it seems). Never tried 4.0 on it

I have slitaz 2.0 installed on another partition, desktop actions seem faster, but GUI programs run very slow, scrolling is slow, but not as slow as on slitaz 4.0

Anyone know howto post a large log file on here?

Do you have xorg-xf86-video-sis-0.10.3.tazpkg installed?

Xorg is using the VESA driver @ 1024x768

There is an issue with sis where it auto-loads vesa over sis driver on some hardware.

Maybe you could get better performance with sis driver if it's compatible with your graphics chipset.

To find out if it matches the pciids of your graphics chipset post this output:

lspci -nn | grep -i VGA

Then I install the driver and grep modules.alias for a pciids match.

If it matches you will edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-Device.conf

Changing

to

Driver "sis"

I went ahead and tried this:

Changing

Driver "vesa"

to

Driver "sis"

I rebooted and a higher resolution loaded, so I changed it to 1024x768 and 85 refresh rate. (16 inch crt monitor)

It didn't seem to make any difference. I looked at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-Device.conf

and my setting remained at Driver "sis"

The sis driver is not a module so it wouldn't be in modules.alias

I looked in the driver source code:

Edit 60-Device.conf logout X session, if xorg starts check Xorg.0.log to verify your running the sis driver.

Be prepared for xorg not to start, login console as root, use nano text editor to switch the driver back to vesa if sis fails.

If xorg starts but still uses vesa:

Remove xorg-xf86-video-vesa to force xorg to use sis.

Repack vesa while in root folder before you remove it in case you black screen and need to re-install it:

[c]# tazpkg repack xorg-xf86-video-vesa[/c]

[c]# tazpkg remove xorg-xf86-video-vesa[/c]

Logout X session, if your stuck in console:

login root

No (EE) which are serious errors.

The log looks good,but what effect does it have on video performance?

The resolution increased to 1280x960,with more pixels to draw the video may be more sluggish than with the vesa driver.

I always have to switch to 1024x768

I have an old 4:3 crt monitor, and the settings always try to default to "widescreen resolutions".

Is there any way to set the color depth to 16bit instead of 24bit?

I remember years ago with this computer running win98-SE, 16bit color depth increased performance a lot.

I'm not complaining at all about slitaz. On my Dell mini 1010 netbook, once I got the GMA500 graphics sorted out in slitaz 4.0, it runs like a racecar.

Add # in front of lines from SubSection=>EndSubSection with Depth  24

Be prepared to undo if the monitor blanks.

That didn't work.. I got it back to the desktop using nano. But Now I'm back loading VESA

When I was running SiS, every time it boots, it loads 1400x1050 resolution, and I have to set it back to 1024x768. It doesn't save the settings.

I think it's time to salvage the drives and send this box to the junkpile.

It's so slow, no one could ever get any work done on it, it may be good for old DOS games or something.

You habe been successful running slitaz with 1366x768 on a dell netbook with

gma 500-chip. Can You just tell me how You did? I have a Acer Spire-One 751 with GMA-500. The greatest pain is using (trying to use) the mousewheel for scrolling in

pdf- or txt-files. Thank You (or other) for help.
