This was the LORAM-version from Slitaz 4.0 and I though, 192 MB RAM is enough for this... :-( But, maybe I'm wrong.
With Slitaz 3.0 I have all the problems described above, especially that my eth0 does not run...
But I will think about your advice.

That probably explains the problem. For installing, do NOT boot lowram
Try again, this time boot the CD from slitaz core (2nd line), as I have said.
Good chance it will work, and at least, we know why you have had this problem so we can work now.

I booted the CD from slitaz core (2nd line), as you said, but the Live-CD was the Loram-Version from here: http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/4.0/flavors/

What you used, installed squashfs and does not install xorg and openbox. I have no real experience with that animal....
Try the regular distribution. I believe it will work (but it may be slow, we will see)

I had a look through this (very long) topic.
I read you have 192 MB but in your first post you wrote "192 MB RAM (128 KB Level-2-Cache, 8 MB RAM für Bildschirmanzeige)". 128 + 8 ???
SliTaz 2.0 needed 160 MB tu run (64 for loram). Launched from 4.0 loram or stable, I suspect it doesn't stay enough memory to TazPanel to install SliTaz.
May be you should install SliTaz manually ? See http://doc.slitaz.org/fr:handbook:installation#installation-a-la-main
The doc is written in french (sorry, I didn't take time to translate it yet) for the stable release. If you use the slitaz-4.0-core.iso, you have to uncompress only one rootfs.gz.

I succeded one hour ago :-)))
I took the slitaz 4.0 - NOT loram (the normal version). This was my idea after some searching in the web. I see, you had the same idea, christophe :-)
I think, there's something wrong with the Slitaz-loram-liveCD ("animal", like christophe say ;-) ) for installation!
I write this posting with MY NEW SLITAZ on my old notebook :-))) It's not very fast, but seems to be ok.

I knew you had the wrong option for installing, (but i had not suspected you had used the lowram option -I never had tried this).
I knew the system will boot with 192MB ram, I've done it here before telling you to do so, so it was not making sense; until you said you used lowram....

As a Live-CD the loram-Slitaz 4.0 works on my old machine, whereas the "normal" Slitaz 4.0 does not (see above, it's booting, but I can't open midori for example) - and I couldn't see that there is anything missing or any problem with taking this for installing. So I tried to install from this CD (and I thought, you know... sorry).
One problem appears now (I had that problem with the Live-CDs too):
After sometime doing nothing (maybe 5-10 minutes) the Display goes black and I can't see a way (key combination?) to return to normal modus.
- Is that the hibernation modus? (See here: http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/slitaz-shutdown-wakeup-timer#post-2301 ).
- Is there any way to stop that and return to normal modus (except pressing the on-off-switch)?
- How can I disable the hibernation modus or extend the period of time until it's beginning?

I don't think this issue comes from SliTaz. Did you check options in BIOS?
It seems to me there already is a topic with a similar problem. I'm going to try to find it.

I agree with you, it can be a little bit risky to work in command lines with beginners but if TazPanel had not worked, I didn't see really another solution and I thought that Kate already tried to install with the stable iso.
128 + 8... It was 128 KB of cache of course and not 120 MB + 8 MB.
I now understand why it didn't do the account... Too long topic or more probably read to quickly.

thank you. While booting my notebook there is only the possibilitiy to choose F2 and after that there are the following options:
Select boot device
[C]: CD-Rom
[F]: FDD
[B]: Built-in HDD
[D]: Default SYSTEM SETUP Device
I don't know, what [D] means, so I didn't try that until now...

At any rate this is not hibernation. (hibernation is disabled by default on slitaz).
ctrol+alt+del should bring you back to a (text) login screen.
Does that work, or is your machine frozen ?
And obviously this is not the normal mode of operation for Slitaz

Did you have similare problems with W2000 in the past ?
I will run out of steam rapidly... Let's see if Kultex or Ceel has some more ideas on that one

It happens _only_ after doing nothing a few minutes (maybe 5-10 minutes). If I do something (until now: little surfing, "looking arround"), it don't happen. And - as told above - it was the same with the Live-CDs.

Not exactly your problem but may be it can help.
[*]install xorg-xset with tazpanel
[*]open a terminal; no need to be root
[*]type [c]xset s off; xset -dpms[/c] and hit [Enter]
Hope it works and if yes, probably the problem comes from the hardware.
Inconvenient: you'll have to do it at each boot, I didn't find the way to make it persistent. I'm going to search it.
Concerning F2 key, it allows you to choose the device to boot; option [D]: Default SYSTEM SETUP Device boots according to the setup in BIOS. It exists a key that gives access to the setup but if you never did it, forget it. This can be dangerous.

I searched during my pause at 12 and found the topic http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/display-gets-turned-off-after-some-minutes I was looking for. It's quite the same and both give the same solution.
I'd better to go to bed earlier yesterday evening than write stupidity; all is writen in the topics to make the modification permanent. So I restart:
[*]with TazPanel, install xorg-xset (xset is for Xvesa, not for Xorg)
[*]click on the [Applications] button
[*]choose Preferences
[*]select Auto started applications
[*]click on the [Configuration] button
[*]at the end of the autostart.sh file that is now opened add the following lines
[c]# xset[/c]
[c]xset s off; xset -dpms &[/c]
[*]save modifications and quit
[*]close X session (exit in the SliTaz Logout box) and login
Normally your screen should stay on all the time now. I tried on my computer (not a notebook) and it works.

@ Kate - der Vorschlag von Ceel funktioniert - habe ich schon mal benutzt für ein Projekt, bei dem sich der Bildschirm nicht ausschalten soll.
Aber ich würde zuerst was anderes machen - Dein Bildschirm läuft noch auf vesa, das funktioniert, aber es nutzt Deine Grafikkarte nicht ordentlich aus und das Problem, dass er sich aufhängt könnte daher kommen.
wie schon am Anfang des Posts beschrieben - hast Du eine S3 savage - die solltest Du mit tazx und der Auswahl savage installieren können - im Prinzip sollte das problemlos funktionieren - eventuell kann aber auch ein Problem auftreten und Dein Bildschirm ist schwarz - sag ich lieber mal vorher

I installed opera and this runs too. I am writing you from slitaz with opera.
First I tried this instruction from Ceel: http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/altes-notebook-div-probleme-mit-live-cds-auflosung-lan/page/7#post-24542 (because I was little afraid of this statement from kultex: "eventuell kann aber auch ein Problem auftreten und Dein Bildschirm ist schwarz - sag ich lieber mal vorher" ;-) ).

But in the TazPanel there seems to be no possibility to use this command (Panel/terminal says "Commands: cat du help ls ping pwd who wget"). I tried with the "normal" terminal too, but didn't succeed - I suppose, I didn't use the correct commands... Nevertheless I do 2.-8. of this instruction, but there was no result.
Then I tried the advice from kultex:

And - wow - it runs!!!
After some minutes (maybe 10, like before) there starts something like the screen saver in Windows (it's black with some colored dots in the right and left corner at the bottom). One mouse action or pushing a key and the desktop starts again. So everything is ok.
Now I'm curious about how to work with Slitaz. First I will try to install a mail program, an editor (geany) and will look if I can hear an audio cd. And I need something like word: Do you think, Abiword will run?

Nimm claws mail als Mail Programm und Abiword läuft problemlos....
aber alles hintereinander nicht gleichzeitig - da wirst mehr Freude damit haben - kontrolliere mit df -h im terminal - Du solltest swap so wenig wie möglich nutzen

Hallo kultex, danke. Läuft alles recht gut.
df -h liefert bisher bei tempfs (/dev/shm) - das wird doch wohl der swap sein? - immer eine Auslastung von 0%. Geht auch alles recht schnell, der Lüfter ist viel leiser als unter Win98 (da ist er kaum zu ertragen).
Fragen, die jetzt auftraten, die ich bislang nicht lösen konnte:
1. Ich habe bei Abiword auch plugins und einige fonts installiert, aber mir fehlt Arial (es sind überhaupt nur wenig Schriften da) - wo könnte ich das herbekommen?
2. Ich wollte einen anderen Desktop-Hintergrund installieren über Anwendungen -> Einstelllungen -> Desktop Wallpaper. Ich habe es mit 2 jpg-Bildern versucht, die (mit ca. 30 und 62 kB) sogar erheblich kleiner sind als das vorinstallierte slitaz-background.jpg (114 kB). Das ist mir nicht gelungen, es wird gar kein Hintergrund-Bild mehr angezeigt (die Hintergrundfarbe konnte ich dagegen problemlos ändern). Woran könnte das liegen? (Ist zwar nicht wirklich wichtig, aber wäre schön...)
3. Claws ist ok und funktioniert. Gibt es eine Möglichkeit dort eine "selektive Abholung" einzustellen (wie bei Pegasus) oder wenigstens, dass zunächst nur die Kopfzeilen heruntergeladen werden (wie bei Thunderbird)?
4. Brauche ich eine Firewall oder sonst irgendwelche Schutzprogramme?
5. Weiter oben sprachst Du davon, dass es auch mit Videos (youtube u.a.) klappen wird :-) Das ist im Moment nicht der Fall, Opera meckert ("Zum Abspielen des Videos ist Adobe Flash Player oder ein HTML5-fähiger Browser erforderlich. Neueste Flash Player-Version herunterladen; Weitere Informationen zum Upgrade auf einen HTML5-Browser"). Was könnte ich da nehmen (muss es Flash sein)?
Würde mich über Rat freuen.
Alles in allem bin ich recht angetan, hätte nicht gedacht, dass es so gut läuft... Irgendwann kommt vielleicht das Win98 ganz runter... :-)))

Guten Morgen kultex,
ich will Dich garnicht weiter nerven, ich denke, ich werde mich mit der Zeit irgendwie durchwursteln.
Wegen Frage Nr. 5 möchte ich Dich aber doch nochmal fragen, denn Du hattest mir ja hier: http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/altes-notebook-div-probleme-mit-live-cds-auflosung-lan/page/2#post-23700 angeboten, mir dabei zu helfen, und Deine Aussage ("wenn Du das alles hast, dann schau ma uns Videos an - sollte kein Problem sein....") ließ mich auch hoffen, dass es geht.
Ich habe nun das Flash-Player Plugin installiert, weil mir in meiner kurzen Recherche auch keine Alternative begegnete, die vielleicht weniger RAM braucht. Jetzt meldet Opera, wenn ich ein youtube-Video (Länge unter einer Minute) abspielen möchte:
"Shockwave Flash ist abgestürzt" (über dem Video-Fenster) und
"Das Plug-in ist abgestürzt" (in dem Video-Fenster)
(Unter Win98 passiert das nicht und Videos lassen sich in Bruchstücken abspielen - was natürlich letztlich auch nicht praktikabel ist.)
Midori macht beim Versuch, das gleiche Video abzuspielen gleich die Biege und klappt sich zu (dies hatte ich ja schon bei den Live-CDs beobachtet, wenn ich eine Website öffnen wollte).
Wenn Du hier noch irgendeinen Tipp hast, wäre ich Dir sehr verbunden.

P.S. Gnumeric habe ich inzwischen auch installiert und Audio-CDs abspielen geht ohne Problem

also zu den Schriften - Du musst die Microsoft Schrifetn installieren - get-msttcorefonts
und nun zum Video Problem:
Installier Dir noch Firefox - ist zwar eine lahme Ente, aber manchmal notwendig und schau mal, was der sagt, wenn Du das Video aufrufst.
und dann müssen wir noch schauen, ob die Grafik auch vollständig funktioniert
installiere mal "mesa-demos" und konntrolliere ob "mesa-dri-savage" installiert ist
neu booten
und poste bitte, welcher Renderer benutzt wird durch den Befehl:
glxinfo | grep render
außerdem wieviel FPS hast Du wenn Du im Terminal glxgears laufen lässt.
