How to remove items/add items from the start menu

Newbie here. Very impressed with the speed of this thing on the oldest dog on earth! OMG! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! Insane! Now I am giving away a computer I built out of garage parts to an older person who doesn't have a computer, can't afford one and this will be his first computer altogether "to learn".

I believe that for the purpose of using a browser and watching DVDs he will not need to use most of the stuff in the start menu but a couple of icons maybe. I right clicked on the thing but all I could do as to customize the menu was changing the icon of the menu. I know this thing isn't for newbies but I have enough of a clue so I believe I can take directions to tweak his install/distro/whatever.

- Is there a gui to modify the start menu?

- If there isn't one can I modify the file where those entries are at with a text editor maybe?

- When I install a program with your package manager does this program appear in the menu on its own?

- Some things stay in English without any sort of suitable translation (I switched the language to Spanish at the beginning on the splash screen at boot), I'm totally fine with that but this older guy doesn't speak English.

You guy/s deserve a great deal of recognition for putting together this thing!

Re: How to remove items/add items from the start menu

LXDE uses .desktop files which I believe are in /usr/share/applications

These files are automatically installed with the application

do a google search the lxde panel wiki is very understandable

Re: How to remove items/add items from the start menu

Hello!

I not sure about menu editor. I was going to write my own menu editor, but it's a long story wink I'll tell you how to do it using simple text editor.

1) Log in as root, open PCManFM

or

open PCManFM, click menu Tool→Open Current Folder as Root

2) Go to folder /usr/share/applications. Here you can see all your application's icons.

3) Right click on icon, open in Leafpad text editor.

4a) If you want to add Spanish translation, then add lines:

Name[sp]=Translated name you can see in menu near application icon

Comment[sp]=Comment you can see if you leave your mouse cursor under this menu item

4b) If you want to hide this menu item, add line:

Hidden=true

4c) You can move or delete this file instead of hide it in menu.

Re: How to remove items/add items from the start menu

hola helloworld..

Saludos

Re: How to remove items/add items from the start menu

You guys are as fast to respond as this os runs on  this old dog,and you do it in more than one language! Damn! Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

@Christophe: Will take a look at LXDE and will look at the .Desktop files a to see what I grasp. Can't be that hard though context menus right on the items would be so awesome.

@Aleksej: Seems easy enough! Thank you. I wonder if getting the source and modding the LXDE menu so you could right click and hide/change/comment on items would be too difficult for someone with programming skills. IAll I ever did was VB a million years ago though. I wonder if there is such a thing as easy as VB in the Linux world.
