I did a search of this forum about screen resolution, and found the following:

One of the terminal steps was wget to a trixarian.za.net to get the tazpkg.
Unfortunately, there is no longer a trixarian.za.net. so where could I get
the package lxrandr.tazpkg, or can someone tell me how to change the default
screen resolution?

This did not help because the monitor settings box only goes up to 800x600 and I need 1024x768.
Also, even though the "Spider > Preferences > monitor settings" persisted in the menu, nothing
happened when clicked.
It's too bad that such a seemingly good distro would have monitor resolution problems with
nvidia since it's such a common graphics card. And why did the monitor settings persist in menu,
but no longer worked?
It's problems like these that give linux a bad name. Every linux system I've ever tried has been
this way. I'm not stupid, but I'm no guru either. I don't like windows, but at least it doesn't
give me endless headaches trying to get everything straightened out. Ubuntu has conquered most of
the problems and installs properly, but it's too big.
It should already be included that my nvidia driver could run. Don't anyone bother responding unless you can get me a pkg that all I have to do
is install it and my screen resolution becomes adjustable to the full limit of it's capabilities without me having to perform extensive guru manipulations to get it to work. I simply don't have the time.

Let me try putting this as nicely as I can. Unlike what some Linux zealot may have told you, SliTaz is not and never will be Windows or Ubuntu in a 30MB iso. It leaves stuff out to save space, which means YOU have to make an effort to make it work like you want. People like me and mojo might make it simpler for you by providing programs and steps that make it simpler for you, but we won't do it for you. This isn't a reflection on Linux, but your self and your unreasonable expectations.
Did Firefox or Chrome make a name for themselves by being Exactly like Internet explorer or was it because they were different to it that we use them? Didn't they come with features it never had and which we never seen before? Or did you just want an IE clone? Exactly. Linux is not Windows and was never meant to be. Comparing the two is like comparing a fast motorcycle with a fast car and equally stupid if you complain about it.
That said, you need to install the nvdia drivers through tazx, at which point lxrandr will display higher resolutions. Oh and before you bitch about that too, blame nvdia for wanting to be paid to have the drivers that make their cards worked shipped with a distro, not Linux for this extra effort. But if you want a distro that does everything out of the box for you, try Linux Mint or PCLinuxOS

I would not want it to be like windows, or Ubuntu, and I realize you have to leave stuff out to keep it trim. But display resolution working is not "an unreasonable expectation". I also realize nvidia may be some of the fault, but I don't know how to install much of anything in Linux. Most people don't know when they get a computer whether some of the hardware vendors of the hardware used in their computer will be cooperative or not. I think you have an unreasonable expection thinking the average person is going to engineer your inclomplete system. Also, don't try to tell me that having the screen resolution problem I am experiencing solved, will bloat slitaz much. Besides, I'd be happy if the whole system was under 500MB, but then maybe you wouldn't be happy.
You are an arrogant, fierce, Linux supporter, automatically assuming I want a Windows-like system. I hate Windows. The ONLY thing I want in Slitax like Windows are basic things like screen resolution solved for me. The only thing I want is something tiny that works without very many unforseeable problems. I can and will take the time it takes to solve the lack of support for Truecrypt, and some other things which I know I will be burdened with. I don't hear you ragging about my comparison to Ubuntu. Hopefully, you will fix the screen resolution problem, because I can't. If not, someone someday will finish what you are doing and I don't care what they call their name or system.

I've forgot how to make permanent a screen resolution . For the moment, I write a lign
for xrandr in somewhere in the /root/.config folder and the result is that when I log with slim, the resolution is only 800*600 . How can I change the default resolution ?

I'm not. I have, use and support both Windows and Linux. But ultimately this is a matter of common courtesy from you. We are unpaid volunteers, so we tend to respond in the manner that we are questioned. You see, unless you pay us, we don't have to take abuse from you. If you asked in a nice and calm way, we would respond in a helpful and fast manner. If you come bitching about what is wrong with the system using references that have nothing to do with the problem at hand, then we'll respond in a less helpful manner or just ignore you.
Oh and here is the step by step guide to fix most screen resolution issues:
1. Open xterm
2. Type su and press enter/return
3. Enter your root password (root by default) and press enter/return
4. Make sure you're online
5. Type tazx and press enter/return
6. Select Install or Configure Xorg and click OK
7. Wait for it to download the lists
8. Select nv from the list
9. Close the tazx box
10. Back in xterm type tazhw detect-pci and press enter/return
11. Now go back to lxrandr and try setting your resolution again
That fixes the resolution issue 8 times out of 10. If it doesn't work, it means you have a Nvdia card that's too old or too new for the driver. If it's too new, then try one of the packages @ http://people.slitaz.org/~jozee/packages/ . In the case that it's too old (which is rare), it's Nvdia's fault again for dropping support of it, at which point you won't be able to use it fully without downgrading your Linux kernel.
See how helpful I can be? Hopefully you've learned that being nice gets you better and faster responses from a community driven project.

Thnx, I can use the last post, and after 2 1/2 days of figuring out how to make things persistent and control where to store them, and trying and failing to get screen resolution right, I was very, very frustrated, and one of my character defects is to whine and bitch. Anyway, you still have a problem with when the tux screen comes up and then asks for password. The system does not wait long enough to analyze the login, and consequently, all logins fail no matter what the password is. Just thought I'd tell, you even though that is not really a problem to me now, but will be for others.

Wow, I went through that exact issue, but Trixar_za is very correct with mood swings.
I know its frustrating but a wise man told me, "Out of anger comes inovation
and great things". In other words, allow people to help you that can, while

It also seems to be a common complaint by Windows and Ubuntu users about SliTaz and I have a very low tolerance with people that go on the "Linux is not ready for production because ___" type rants. It's one of my weaknesses.
I think people don't understand that SliTaz is so small because it leaves certain parts out and uses generic drivers until you install the right one. This misunderstanding the complete lack of mentioning in the offline docs about lxrandr and tazx (tazhw can be accessed from tazhwbox), leaves many confused and frustrated.

In first time maybe you can used 915resolution.
Go on xterm and write 915resolution, choose your mode and go on tazpanel, and boot menu.
Edit Local startup command and write for example
# Screen resolution
/usr/bin/915resolution 54 1024 600
It's ok for me but i am in Aspire One, i don't know if it's work for you.

I think people should remember that Windows is not perfect either. Many times when I have used Windows I have had to download drivers and tweak and tweak and tweak.
I too would like to have the RESOLUTION easier to change. However, I don't think there's anything in the world that would make me want to go back to Windows or Apple.
"Back at the Ranch" I wish I could fix my resolution to 1024X768.

I'm also having problems getting my screen resolution above 800x600.
I've been through the steps outlined but I'm missing something.
I would like to get 1024x768 screen resolution working on 4.0 stable.
I have a Sony laptop - model PCG-FX250.
(It appears to have an 82815EM CGC (not AGP))
System Information shows:
Host bridge - 82815 815 chipset
VGA controller - Intel 82815 graphics controller
PCI bridge - 82801 Mobile PCI bridge
Currently:
800x600 is working with slitaz 3.0 stable
800x600 is working with slitaz 4.0 stable
640x400 is working with slitaz 4.0 cooking
Here's what I've tried (based on forum info):
(started terminal)
# su
(passwd)
# tazpkg get-install linux-agp
(package already installed)
# tazhw detect-pci
...
> Module in use: intel_agp
...
(I'm not sure this is right - I don't think I have an AGP card)
# tazx
(I selected Xorg and waited for package updates)
(I selected intel from the displayed list)
(To test, as directed, I tried the following:)
# X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
(The system reported that the server is already active)
(I don't know how to properly restart the server so I rebooted)
(No change - only available Monitor resolutions are 800x600, 640x480)
# lxrandr
(showed 800x600 as maximum resolution)
# xrandr
(showed 800x600 as maximum resolution)
So, I'm not sure what to do next.
Should I remove intel_agp? (I don't know how but it's a thought.)
Have I missed anything?

@ridge, not an expert on this and I am not using Intel cards, but after intel driver installation via tazx, you should logout from your current xsession and log back in. Also, I would check /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-Device.conf file to make sure that the driver listed there is intel - if not change it and log back in. Hope this is useful.

I checked /etc/X11/xorge.conf.d/60-Device.conf. Yes, intel is in there:
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "intel"
BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
All other lines are commented out (including DRI).
Do you know how to take intel_agp out of the kernel configuration?

@ridge, not sure how to remove intel_agp but I would be hesitant to do that.... (in fact, I have a nvidia card and my lsmod shows that intel_agp is loaded).
I would try adding modes option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-Screen.conf like...

Of course the in your case the Modes option will provide the list of modes supported by your graphics card.

I was *not* successful with Slitaz 4.0 cooking.
I did a clean install of Slitaz 4.0 stable and was successful.
I didn't find that adding "screen=1024x768" did anything,
however, maybe I'm not understanding.
I modified /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-Monitor.conf as shown by mojo
and modified /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-Screen.conf as indicated by gdesilva.
I logged out and back in. The display switched to 1024x768.

Dear all,
I am currently working on a portrait-oriented application (customer decision)
I located file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-Monitor.conf and added a line to the section:
[c]Option "Rotate" "Left"[/c]
Now, I can have my display in portrait or landscape mode at will. Everything o.k., isn't it?
Er..., not that fast! My (supposedly) portrait-oriented desktop is wider than expected, yet every application launched from it inherits the same 800x800-esque disposition.
Any hint or direction?
