At least, the ati driver is faster than the open-source ati driver in RIPLinuX, which is no slouch. I ran the Peacekeeper Benchmark using the exact same version of google-chrome on both systems, and here is what I got:

Both on an E350 AMD board. Note that tests on AMD 350 boards indicate they give the same performance scores.

Let me be more specific: The RIPLinuX ati driver is faster than the most recent Slackware and the most recent AbsoluteLinux driver using the Peacekeeper Benchmark and google-chromes. But, the Slitaz ati driver gets the results above in the previous post. I went into Windows 7 pro with the "professional" ati driver and downloaded the latest beta google-chrome for Windows, ran the benchmark, and got the results below:

That says the latest Slitaz cooking on another partition of the same computer was running faster than the manufacturer's proprietary driver.

This may be because SliTaz runs lighter than Windows 7 so more resources are available. SliTaz also uses a cut down version of xorg, which makes it even lighter on the resources. More resources == better results.
