1. I burned firefox iso to cd and booted from the resulting live CD.
2. I used Tazusb from spider menu to make a flashdrive.
3. I booted the flash drive and a username login screen came up with "tux" already filled in.
4. I hit enter and a password screen came up with nothing already filled in.
5. I typed in "root" and hit enter.
6. A message flashed briefly on the screen which said "failed to execute login command", and the
username screen (with "tux" already filled in) returned.
Multiple repeats of step 4 - 6 did the same thing.
Trying different passwords or leaving it blank did the same thing.
What is wrong, please?

Login will fail if the flash or hard drive slitaz is installed on is formated with fat32 or ntfs windows filesystems.
I suggest installing slitaz to linux ext3 filesystem if this is the issue.
tux has no password leave password blank hit enter key.
root password is root.

I can do that. Could I use ext4, and would it be any better?

I've been using ext3 for over 10 years and never had a problem.
Ext4 is new, I don't trust it.

When flash drive was formatted as fat32 and I used tazusb and made a bootable flash drive, it showed up on my computer bios boot as a sandisck cruzer under "removable devices". Also, when flash drive was booted, it gave me tux username and password screens and would not respond to "root" when entered. I was told to format flashdrive with ext3, then use tazusb, which I did. When I formatted the flash drive as ext3, it showed up on my computer bios boot as another hard drive instead of under removable devices.
Also, when booted, no tux username/password screen came up it just booted up. At the slitaz flash screen boot I had typed "slitaz home=sdc1 lang=en kmap=us". I tried home=usb but it put the tux folder on my windows drive. So I figured out that home=sdc1 would put tux folder on my flash drive. Now I still have the screen resolution problem. In addition, I installed lxrandr.tazpkg, and when I rebooted, the spider > preferences > Monitor settings entry was there, but clicking on it did not bring up the box with resolution choices. In other words, the menu choice was persistent, but the lxrandr install was not.
So now there are 2 problems:
1. lxrandr install is not persistent. Am I supposed to reinstall lxrandr.tazpkg after every boot?
2. Even when I reinstall lxrandr with your directions which follow, I can now go back to spider > preferences > Monitor settings, click on it, the resolution choice box comes up but there still is no higher than 800x600 choice. These are the directions you gave me.
1. Open xterm
2. Type su and press enter/return
3. Enter your root password (root by default) and press enter/return
4. Make sure you're online
5. Type tazx and press enter/return
6. Select Install or Configure Xorg and click OK
7. Wait for it to download the lists
8. Select nv from the list
9. Close the tazx box
10. Back in xterm type tazhw detect-pci and press enter/return
11. Now go back to lxrandr and try setting your resolution again

Right click the desktop,choose Logout, Logout X session
This will kill and restart Xserver showing the graphical login manager with the gold SliTaz above Username: tux
If xorg.conf was configured correctly by tazx
you should have at least a 1024x768 resolution.
Hit enter twice, the desktop appears.
Before you shut down save installed settings and software:
Right click desktop,SliTaz Live,TazUSB Writefs (gzip),hit Enter twice when prompted about soundcard and screen settings. After tazusb is done recompressing new filesystem,hit Enter to close out terminal.
Now you can shutdown and reboot without having to reconfigure.

I did this as you said:

After doing steps 1-9 screen went black, returned and xterminal had something about a failure hunk1. So I don't think steps 1-9 even worked right.
Then I did this:

Instead, this happened.
The x server was killed and a black screen saying slitaz login: came up. A little while later the following was added: slim[2379]: segfault at 3065314f ip b7e28d6c sp bfb0d7f0 error 4 in libx11.so.6.0[b7de0000+13a000] and nothing further happened.

Well, I haven't seen a response yet. I'm ready to give up, I don't know what else to do. I've seen other posts having resolution problems with slitaz also. I'm grateful for this system, but it's of no use to me without higher than 800x600 resolution. Unless you don't care if this system gains in popularity, and only want it for a limited few, that's up to you. I realize your work is voluntary. I know there are many unforseen complications, and some people just don't know enough to get this running. I would appreciate it if you used a program called "Clonezilla" and clone a usb drive that you have working on your own computer with greater than 800x600 resolution, and make it available for download. I know that works, I've used clonezilla to clone my usb slitaz that works at 800x600, and restored it to another USB flash drive. In fact, I'm using the cloned image from clonezilla, right now to post on this forum. If you make a clonezilla image file, and then if it doesn't work, I'm sure that there's something about my computer or its hardware that's unusual, or if you guys just don't know enough to be making slitaz available to any but a select few. Good luck, I'm not blaming anyone. All I know is that Ubuntu has given me proper resolution from the get-go, so it must be possible for any linux system to work with nvidia video cards. Maybe you need to ask an Ubuntu developer how they did it, if they'll even tell you, I don't know. I also know that I'm generally smart enough to install every system I've ever tried except for slitaz...so far, and actually I have succeeded in installing and persisting to a USB. No one seems able to help with the resolution problem. I never even got to my next obstacle which would be to install truecrypt, but I'm sure I'd be able to, but I'm not even going there with 800x600 being my best resolution. If someone finds a solution to this problem, I would appreciate an email at benmayim@hotmail.com. I'll also check back at this forum every once in a while, but an email to me would be better, sometimes I miss seeing some things on a forum.

I tried slax. On their init screen I could choose VESA which implements a standard VESA driver and forces it to 1024x768, just what I needed.

At the slitaz flash screen boot I had typed "slitaz home=sdc1 lang=en kmap=us"
Add the bold text to your boot command:
"slitaz home=sdc1 lang=en kmap=us screen=1024x768x24"
tazx reads /proc/cmdline, writes Modes "1024x768" under Depth 24 to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

OK, did what mojo said used "slitaz home=sdc1 lang=en kmap=us screen=1024x768x24" and that changed nothing.
tried "slitaz home=sdc1 lang=en kmap=us screen=1024x768x24 vga=791" that changed screen resolution to correct resolution but only the black screen leading up to the slitaz desktop. When the desktop arrived, the whole desktop screen was again 800x600 and firefox browser was only in 800x600, and the resident text editor you get from right-clicking the desktop.
