Change default new user settings?

How do I change the default settings that are applied to newly created users?

I want to change the default applications in the launch bar in the topleft corner for example, and it seems unnecessary work to do it manually for every new user created while I want to have it the same for all of the new users.

The same goes for a custom livecd ISO I'm trying to create.

Thanks for any help :-)

(sorry I don't know if I am in the right section, feel free to move this topic)

Re: Change default new user settings?

I have not tried this but I think the profile default is in /etc/skel.

Experiment if changing things there works

Re: Change default new user settings?

So I need to create a new user, configure the user to my liking, and then copy some files from the user to /etc/skel ?

And what files? (sorry I'm a bit of a noob)

Re: Change default new user settings?

No, the other way around. /etc/skel controls the default configuration for each newly created user. Changing something in it will change the settings for all users created after the change.

Re: Change default new user settings?

Can I log in to /etc/skel some way to change things?

Re: Change default new user settings?

It's not a user, but a template used when creating users. I think only the root user can really modify it, but it's worth it when making future users.

Re: Change default new user settings?

you guys both have it right.

Trixar explains that when you create a new user, then the templates for the new user are found in /etc/skel.

So if you customise some file on your own user and want to make the changes available for newer user, then just update the corresponding configuration files in /etc/skel; they will be used next time you create a new user.
