I'm designing a server for audio systems. I planned to use Lubuntu, thinking it would be about the most efficient OS possible, but recently ran across an article about SliTaz and think I might ditch Lubuntu.
I wonder if anyone can offer me any advice about how to set up SliTaz and anything to watch out for. The hardware will include a Core2 processor, 1G ram and a Juli@ sound card (uses ALSA drivers). I want to create the most efficient and low overhead system I possibly can, which means no network connections, album art, cd ripping, WiFi, iPad connectivity, graphical themes, etc...Just Playing Music.
I would install to the HD. Running from RAM sounds like an interesting feature, if it can be done with the HD install method.
Any advice you can offer is appreciated.

Hello Devl547, thanks for the reply. I should have been more specific about the end product. It has to be simple enough that my mother (who's not a techie) could use it, so command-line interfaces are out. I don't find much about MPC, but I assume it's a command-line program? Audiophiles don't like DSPs, so the mixer is probably not necessary. What I want to avoid is having processes going on in the background that have nothing to do with the player (like those ridiculous Windows themes).
Could be that the standard SliTas install, with ALSA player is about as good as I can do right now?
On a separate note, is anyone ever going to make a Linux player that has the Foobar/iTunes style filters? If you have a few hundred or thousand albums, this makes Linux a real drawback, because people want to be able to filter by Genre, Artist, etc.
Also, if anyone has an answer about running the SliTas disk install from memory, please chime in.

MPD (music playing daemon), front ends are optional, and come in many styles if you choose one including webbrower front ends for remote access.
I have no idea how foobar/itunes filter their crap, but I guarentee If you can't find one you haven't looked hard enough, if there is one thing linux is on the cutting edge of it is multimedia players.

ario is in wok, afaik. And I'll add rhythmbox soon.

Also - Deadbeef. It's probably one of the smallest, functional and plugin rich player out there. It can also be downloaded, extracted and run from a precompiled archive. One downside of SliTaz is that you probably won't be able to listen to wma files in anything other than mplayer, but other than that deadbeef will probably be the easiest to use.

Thanks for the tips guys. In my opinion, FLAC is the only standard that's essential right now and in the future, DSD will probably take the throne. I'm thinking I'll try setting up the VESA flavor first and maybe check out the Loram, for sonic differences later on.

By the looks of it, most players can play flac including Deadbeef (http://deadbeef.sourceforge.net/about.html)
And if you're wondering how to install it, just download the static i684 copy from http://deadbeef.sourceforge.net/download.html - right click-->extract here - enter the directory it creates and run deadbeef. All done

I can't go along with you on that devl547. It only qualifies as hardcore to us if it sounds better, but I admire your commitment to manual labor.

Hello everyone.
I have HP t5720 Thin Client (512MB RAM/512MB HDD) with Slitaz 4.0 installed. I use it as an audio server with external HDD and DAC connected via USB. I had Deadbeef 0.5.1 installed and everything worked perfectly.
Few days ago I upgraded Deadbeef to 0.5.5 version and upgraded packages through Tazpanel. Now Deadbeef doesn't work with .ape files. Slitaz after upgrade uses almost 200MB of my HDD, and system reinstall doesn't fix this problem. I want .ape (with .cue sheets) support back.
What to do? Please note, that I'm completely beginner.

Yes, I do. But there is no Monkey Audio decoder which I have in Deadbeef 0.5.5 on my Linux Mint 13.

Probably a missing requirement at compile then. I'll have a look at it a little later.

Had a look and it seems yasm was the missing requirement, so I added it. The package should be rebuilt in the next few hours and be in the repository by tomorrow.

Can you provide a sample file? Maybe the plugins need to be rebuilt too. I'll get on that. Funny enough the stand-alone version on the deadbeef site doesn't have these issues.
