the new gods of slitaz, are they now blind? a report and claim about new installations...

Hi

As the last new version of SliTaz rolling is now easy to install on the PC, that I did buy now because the last one did burn out (it is the same but the next model in age, a DELL Optiplex SX280 instead of DELL Optiplex SX270. The changes are minimal, but I can not check any more what did now become better: the PC or the new ISO) I am now again active.

Until yet, I was it rarely with SliTaz 4.0 because it was not possible to start Xwindows in more than 640 x 480 and, terrible thing, because the SliTaz Gods implement setting up value making SliTaz absolutely not able to be used in modus 640 x 480 because you can read nothing, instead to select fonts and fonts size tested in that poor modus!

I find it's a fierce ruthlessness :-( !

But it is not my question today:

My question is that SliTaz will n't work at all very well in some other modus!

The installation is very easy:

Burn ISO on CD (or pre install frugal as I do do avoid to use some CD, a terrible way! Burn a CD for 40 MB, the worst possible solution for the environment!!!) and restart with CD.

Slitaz starts live! Enter as "tux" needing no password...

Shrink your NTFS partition with Gparted (pre installed in SliTaz).

Install 3 new partitions (an extended one as I have 0.5 Terra byte to use, a new primary partition for maintenance, a new swap partition) on the new free place.

(As I did not know if SliTaz would work in my "new" used PC, I did it with Puppy Gparted. And SliTaz's Gparted claims now each start "Libparted Bug Found: Error opening /dev/hda: No medium found". Puppy's Gparted, most actual version from Barry Kauler, never claims. As I am not certain that SliTaz's Gparted can work in safe mode, I am condemned to continue to return to Puppy, if I have to do somewhat needed to work on the partitions table :-( ... who is to blame of both? But, you, you will probably not meet that problem if you only use SliTaz since begin! I hope so...)

After that, it was really easy:

> applications

>> system tools

>>> SliTaz panel

>>>> enter with user name root and password root

>>>>> install

>>>>>> install SliTaz

>>>>>>> continue installation

>>>>>>>> mark some option's fields / enter some values:

web + rolling

to partition sda5 (made with Gparted before, see problem with SliTaz's Gparted)

home on sda8 (made with Gparted before)

hostname slitaz (if good enough for you)

rootpassword somewhat very complex

user tux

tux's password: erase the actual proposed content if you don't need to have to enter some password as simple user, SliTaz gives you traditionally that comfort!

install boot loader: do your best

<small>(I did not try this part as I did do it with Puppy as I never use some CD or USB, I always start ISO as frugal or renounce to use the poor distro being unable to offer a clean way to start directly from CD! It is non sens to install big hard disk and have to use a USB stick or CD because the GNU programmers are not able to take care on that...)</small>

>>>>>>>>> proceed to SliTaz installation

after a very short time I follow the invite "restart and start your fresh new installation" as my /boot/grub/menu.lst was already fully prepared for the new slitaz installation ;-) !

all that happens perfectly! very good, really!

Re: the new gods of slitaz, are they now blind? a report and claim about new installations...

Oh, I seem to be happy?

Until yet, yes, excepted above problem with Gparted but perhaps it is only a problem coming from Puppy's Gparted (but created through the reality that it is not possible to do somewhat in 640x480 in SliTaz... So, to avoid that, you start directly with Puppy!)...

The new installation starts very well!

I log in as "tux" (no password needed as I did erase the field "password" at the installation).

I can begin to explore my new main Linux system on my new hard disk:

> applications

>> internet

hm, no Mozilla (Firefox did be the standard pre installed browser all the long time SliTaz 1.0, SliTaz 2.0, SliTaz 3.0) but a lot of other browsers:

- Midori private

- Midori web

- retawq

- TazWeb

probably no problem also!

Error :-( , big error :-( ...

I continue and hit on TazWeb as I already know it as environment for Slitaz panel:

oh, the entry field is at the bottom, ok! no problem...

I enter

http://youtube.com

and in the entry field somewhat I know and like (Anoushka Shankar Georg).

<b>error message:</b>

"no adequate plugin, pls install flash player plugin"

as I am not a beginner in SliTaz, I do immediately a first test to install it. But as I know it is tricky, I read the tutorial once time more befor I do that. You find such a tutorial easily searching here:

http://www.slitaz.org/en/search.php

on this page, you will search on all parts of SliTaz webpages (in other search pages, you search through all the web and it is really not very useful!)

and search: flashplayer

The first link founded is the best one, but the French version is more detailled (and the German one would propose you how to reinstall Midori, read more!): http://doc.slitaz.org/fr:guides:flash

As it is command line code I open Sakura and enter:

[c]tazpkg get-install get-flash-plugin && get-flash-plugin[/c]

Really easy!

Flash is installed!!! Hurrah! I can open Midori (or TazWeb) and restart youtube.

But flash will refuse very stubbornly to work!

:-( ...

Re: the new gods of slitaz, are they now blind? a report and claim about new installations...

I did not find more through my search.

But I did remember that Midori has an help function. And it speaks about flash! I did do what is explained there, nothing to do. Flash refuses to start in Midori!

In Midori?

Yes, only in Midori :-( ... because, after I did install Seamonkey, youtube starts IMMEDIATELY in Seamonkey, no problem...

Hum, and that is my question in this thread:

the new gods of slitaz, are they now blind?

why did they build in a browser not installed properly as new browser and we did have years and years along a good firefox in the distribution!!!

I am loosing now a full week trying to make that midori / tazweb will do, what a good browser usually does. nothing to do in a fresh installation.

I know: divers very experimented user did announce in the forum: It works on my PC. Last week my first installation was a very very heavy installation, more than 4 Gb, it is really a big installation in SliTaz... And sometime, Midori did bring youtube videos! I suppose that I did install a package for an other purpose in my eyes without to know that this package contains the stuff amending the bad installation of flashplayer in Midori...

But it is nonsens to declare an other browser to the standard browser making more difficulties and don't to create perfect dependency conditions in the installation rules!

Midori is not only one new an supplementary option in SliTaz

but

the main option willing by the developer probably mainly only to decrease the size of the ISO's by a few number of mega byte and if you don't install 4 .. 5 Gbyte after that on it, you will never have a  complete browsing environment excepted if you

return to Mozilla!!!

Please go back go back return in the standard to Mozilla if you don't master the dependencies! A lot of interesting new users says soon "SliTaz is never mature and in perfect running!"

Re: the new gods of slitaz, are they now blind? a report and claim about new installations...

Next problem (and it was the reason why I did erase my big installation of last week and reinstall):

Midori seems don't to be able to operate properly in http://openstreetmap.org in Potlatch2 (see option "edit", 2. option!).

Else after Midori did recognize flash, Potlatch2 did start but open nothing (as if the memory size would be to small on my PC but my PC has really more memory as in the past, now 1 GB, and Potlatch2 starts perfectly in Puppy and all other Linux's...).

Last problem after above small installation

SliTaz manages the keyboard loosing chars into Sakura as well as in xterm: the chars being produced using AltGr are not transmited all to the command line interpreter!

If I write:

# su -c "do that!"

only

# su -c do that!

will appear in the console and the line can't be interpreted (it is about the same with divers other chars being produced using the AltGr key using keyboard for divers languages...) and you have no other way to write such a line than change the keyboard layout!

hard

hard

hard...

Re: the new gods of slitaz, are they now blind? a report and claim about new installations...

As SliTaz does not work properly especially in Midori (and since yesterday the new ISO does not work at all: not possible to restart and reach the "login" - only a shorted console appears for only a limited selection of commando line commands...) I did install the other Helvetic distro in French, NuTyx, to permit to use my PC although SliTaz does not be operable...

and...

Midori works perfectly in NuTyx (else Midori is NOT the first choice of NuTyx as in SliTaz)...

in http://openstreetmap.org Potlatch2 works correctly in Midori in NuTyx!

for this reason I would say it is nonsens to declare a second choice browser as main browser in a distribution if not certain it works properly!
