Starting to get tired of slitaz - seems like you sort one thing and something else happens.
So, alsaplayer was working fine and now it isn't - every time I go to 'add' a file to the playlist it freezes. I haven't, as far as I'm aware, done anything between when it was working and when it stopped.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no luck.
I now have no sound either. What is going on?

Use Puppy Linux. Using SliTaz requires some assembly and will 'tire' you out a lot.
Let me guess - you're trying to run alsaplayer while you have some other application that's taking over ALSA running in the background like Seamonkey on youtube perhaps? Have you tried restarting? If it still doesn't work, then you somehow messed us alsa. I remember one dude that had a similar problem. He was pretty sparse on the details too. Turns out he removed packages to try and make SliTaz smaller with one of them being the alsa packages...
But it's probably you trying to run more than one alsa hogging app at a time. Sometimes closing that program doesn't kill it, so it's still running in the background and keeping other programs from using you're soundcard. There's a way to make it mix the streams, but doesn't work for every program.

I tried rebooting with nothing else running - same problem.
I recovered the sound, this had been turned down, I have no idea how.
I have re-installed slitaz and will try the system one last time but if there is anything else illogical I will give up.
Why do you think Puppy would be better?

If a restart didn't fix it, then you probably broke alsa. You probably could have fixed it by reinstalling the alsa packages.
It's was pretty illogical to reinstall the whole OS for something that could be fixed logically. Most problems can be solved logically.
Why Puppy Linux? It's written for people that prefer ease over configurablity.
