I am using Slitaz as my sole OS since about 2 years.
Open Office 3 is too large for my pc.
When someone sends me .docx and the kind
I try to get around with Abiword, Antiword or Wine plus Notepad+
sometimes it is not possible to open those files at all.
Is there a way of having a Writer-like editor
compatible with the most common formats?
could Write run as a stand alone app on Slitaz?

In addition I want to say that Libre/Open Office splitting into its components have no sense. Office have massive core and relatively small parts for Write, Calc, etc. You can save very few space if you throw away all but Writer.
In other hand, Softmaker's Free Office is (relatively) tiny and (not bad) compatible with even new (docx) Microsoft's proprietary formats. I recommend Free Office too.

I agree that Freeoffice is really good. There is a 2008 free version. I feel it is better than libreoffice (and have read that here and there) except it does not support the latest office formats.
It is good enough that I consider buying the 2012 version to get a better office experience...

Oh, sorry. Docx not supported for Linux.
Maybe, I mismatched it with windows version of Free Office. Or with pirated torrent version (windows too) of Softmaker's (not Free) Office.
It not 100% compatible with Microsoft Office, and still lack some features I need. But it too compact and faster than Open/Libre "brother".

I use FreeOffice frequently because IMHO it's a fantastic office suite, and want to add some notes.
Christophe: Yes, there's also a free version of SoftMaker Office 2008, but it's outdated. FreeOffice is the current free office suite from SoftMaker, compared to SMO 2008 it has many improvements, e.g. better import and export filters for Microsoft Office files, which brings me to
Aleksej: There's no difference between FreeOffice for Windows, and the Linux version. Both versions of FreeOffice are able to open(!) docx, xlsx, and pptx files - faithfully!!, in contrast to LibreOffice, OpenOffice and others that either screw formatting, or don't open files at all.
It's just not possible to save (!) in current Microsoft Office formats. If you want to save as docx, xlsx, and pptx, you will have to purchase the "big" SoftMaker Office for Linux, which btw. has 1000 functionalities more, and is worth every penny. I just saw at the SoftMaker Facebook profile that the prices for upgrades were lowered, you pay $34,95 for three licenses, including free support!
FreeOffice is the best free office suite and good enough for most users, but if you are ambitious and need professional equipment, get SoftMaker Office for Linux, that's the ultimate.

I should have said that if OpenOffice is too heavy for my pc then LibreOffice and KingsoftOffice are too heavy as well. I have tryed them too.
What we need here would be something like Gnumeric. Gnumeric is awesome for a system like Slitaz.
Unfortunately as a 'All-Terrain' TextEditor it seems we have no alternatives.
Evidently I will keep Slitaz and NOT buy a new PC.
Even if it is a pain when a co-worker or the government (Social Security, IRS) sends stuff in .docx format or another proprietary format.
That said I will wait for a small in size and less 'thirsty for resources' TextEditor that can allow me to read and write the most popular proprietary formats.

Abiword with its plugins can open and save docx as well. Maybe you didn't install plugins?
