Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

Arun compiled a new kernel, with the new ide config (now ide devices are sd.. and not hd.. devices - take care, when you use and usb stick for home=/dev/sda1 - it will change to /dev/sdb1) so I could do this iso for testing.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/92249974/slitaz-test-3.2.50-04092013.iso

I included CPU-scaling, which in my oppinion should be included in 5.0 - its important for battery consumption on laptops. But to reduce power consumption is not only essential for portable computers: it is also essential to use it on desktop machines to reduce unnecessary CO2 emissions (about 20% less).

I included also wbar, because 80% of my friends, where i installed SliTaz, want it with wbar - in the mac way, wbar down and the panel up (I prefer it the other way round) - it starts not automatic - there is a button in the panel. If you want to change the look and behavior edit /home/tux/.wbar (second line) and click right on wbar - it is adapted for my small 12" 1024 x 728 monitor

info about wbar http://pclosmag.com/html/Issues/201101/page16.html - under commandline settings you see what all the shortcuts mean.

I removed gparted and parted - parted seems to work only compiled with the right kernel so please do not install and use it - I destroid my harddisk and could recover it only with cfdisk

Known bug: Eject does not work - this is a problem with udev / udevil / spacefm

EDIT - 03.09.2013

===========

included wbar starter for portable QtWeb-Browser and Firefox

Firefox - download from http://www.mozilla.org, extract it with spacefm (doubleclick) and copy evrything whats in the folder firefox-23.0.1/firefox to /home/tux/.firefox

QtWeb download from http://qtweb.net + extract it with "unzip QtWeb-elf386.zip /home/tux/.qtweb" and make QtWeb be able to execute (right click with spacefm - Properties - Permission)

and edit wbar in your home directory (remove # for Firefox / QtWeb)

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

Somehow I'm up to kernel 3.10.x - but well done on a fixed release smile

I'll admit I'm struggling a bit because buildroot really does give you a shitload of options. I'm not really sure what's essential and what's not neutral

Incidentally, expect an email allowing you to play with it too wink

tried it. It boots in my VM, in text mode only, and slim or startx leads to a black screen... sad

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

Just burned a CD and booted my old PII 350Mhz.

All went fine and I wrote this message from this.

I like wbar very much. Have used docky on  my Arch distro, but wbar looks slim and nice.

Could you include QtWeb as default browser ?

Again, nice work guys !

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

I hope I will have time on sunday to work on it - I will not include QtWeb, but I will include all the necessary files for Opera, Firefox and QtWeb so that you just have to extract the download - all are running from the /home directory - so evrybody can choose.

The main question / problem for me is which filemanager we use and how we mount. First, that the user mounts is a security problem - it should be done with the group plugdev - for me thats a must.

Then do we use V1: spacefm + udevil or V2: pcmanfm+udisks+gvfs. Version 1 is definitly smaller and quicker, but ignorantguru, the developer disappiered 6 month ago. Discussion about this started already here: http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/notes-to-new-cooking/page/7 and I will start a new thread abut this question, to keep this thread on testing the iso.

kultex,

Another very nice dock-like bar is Avant Window Navigator (Awn)

You may want to give it a try.

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

Hi Kultex!

Nice try. Tested your ISO with Kernel 3.2.50 from Mailing list (is it the same?). And it works good. And now I'm write from your system. As usually, it needs to some tweaking to my needs.

LXPanel

1. I need Keyboard layout switcher. I'm Russian, and we use two layouts: US (Latin) and RU (Cyrillic) and switch keyboard between them. I live in Ukraine, sometimes we use here Ukrainian layout to write documents Official language.

Guys! I have an idea to add "Keyboard Layout Handler" to LXPanel using our standard script /usr/bin/tazx for all (?) or for selected locales (?)

But I don't know: WHO NEED THIS PANEL ITEM?

I know only about Russian and Ukrainian. Possibly, Greek? Any other? PLEASE, tell me!

And here sub-topic: Compose key. I need it, and can configure it in "Keyboard Layout Handler".

I use it to write some symbols that I missed in the keyboard: «»“”‘’׉©☺…

Only need to write [c]compose:ralt[/c] (for Right Alt key) in the "Keyboard Layout Handler" right box and press disk icon on this box. [OR write default LXPanel config for all SliTaz users?]

And I know French people use Modifier key (again Right Alt?) to write accented and other symbols:

[c]azerty[/c] without RAlt and

[c]æ«€¶ŧ←[/c] with RAlt.

2. "Volume Control" now change their icon, good.

3. "Temperature monitor" works, good.

4. "Manage networks" miss icons, bad.

5. "Task Bar (Window List)" is not good for me. I need more standard look -- text close to icons.

SpaceFM

1. SpaceFM is still strange for me, but it matter of choise.

2. SpaceFM can mount my Hard Disk partitions and USB Flash. SpaceFM opens new tab when USB Flash insert. Have no problems with NTFS partition with Characters Encodings.

All this worth to use this strange filemanager.

Multimedia

ALSAPlayer is small and usable. But my music collection have many tracks in mp4 container (with AAC inside). Before, in SliTaz 4.0 I used Audacity (or Audacious? Can't remember it name!) And I believe that Alsaplayer need to loose it Big Speed Control, but it is question to Alsaplayer's developers.

YouTube. Still not works without FlashPlayer wink Now, when I do not have Wi-Fi, I do not watch Youtube, but wanted to try. What about HTML5 video player?

Video Player. Rarely, about once every few months, I can see the video. Then, on SliTaz 4.0 I used VLC (yes, it's Qt based, with all Qt libs), it's not light, but it works.

Seems like I need to add Multimedia Keys handling to the default Openbox rc file (change volume, mute, log off...)

Development

As far as I'm a developer, I need a developer tools.

I really need Geany. I remember that old versions of SliTaz contains it, but then we loose it in default ISO. Ok, I can download it manually, as far as all there mentioned.

_____

So, here are final questions.

Who need keyboard switcher?

Do we need standard Task Bar (not icons only; with windows names, and not groupped) by default?

Kultex & Arun, thanks to your work!

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

I've been running into similar issues. If it was just an act of building the kernel with busybox and udev, it would be simple, but I can decide on what to include and compile into the image file. This includes codecs, frameworks and several common apps. I just need to dive through them and get it done.

My biggest issue has been the damn file manager too. Also from recently having to work with rox-filer, I've come to despise it. SpaceFM isn't my cup of tea and neither is the 'new' pcmanfm with it's gvfs (amongst others) dependency. razor-qt with pcmanfm-qt is really starting to look good now.

Flash player needs several parts from Netscape and Mozilla to work. Note, I didn't say Firefox because it turns out we provide the required libraries in other packages namely nss and nspr. I haven't checked if it covers all of them, but hopefully we can strip out the libfirefox requirement from flashplayer...

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

@Aleksej its nearly the same - just some more little changes

and yes keyboardswitcher is needed - like all my baltic friends need it also like you and some need 4 keyboards - lithuanian, russian, french and german ...

whats about this

http://wiki.slavka.kiev.ua/index.php/XXkb - you will understand....

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=62979

and I personally preferred it with keyboard shortcut - http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Change_keyboard_layouts

found something else: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=87702.0

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

ran it in frugal mode from iso on a Fujitsu Lifebook S Series

- boot in text mode; root/root then slim = OK

- seems to be faster than rolling

- SpaceFM now sees my HDs (no need to mount them manually as with rolling)

- Sound=OK (no sound with rolling)

- After an upgrade of Wbar and logout/login, no more icon for Wbar and doesn't work anymore.

Promising for the future ;-) nice work!

Concerning QtWeb, I test it for 2 weeks on SliTaz 4 installed on a P4 1.5. Really fast web browser, much faster than Midori or even TazWeb. Still a few bugs (and the french translation is so bad that I use english language)

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

why you upgrade Wbar, because mine is newer and smaller than in Slitaz - I converted it from debian and I think I used 2.3.4 http://code.google.com/p/wbar/downloads/list - Slitaz rolling is on 2.2.2 and 2.3.4 has different syntax

and why you logged in as root? normal user login did not work?

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

Hi kultex,

why you upgrade Wbar

I was testing TazPanel. After the Recharge list, I mechanically checked for upgrades, clicked on Toggle all and then Install.

But I realise that it was certainly stupid of me to upgrade the test iso file. It couldn't have so many packages to update in just one day...

I never think enough...

why you logged in as root? normal user login did not work?

Yesterday evening, same punition as Christophe: black screen.

But this afternoon, after reading your post, I've tested it again and... no problem: I booted 10-15 times just typing [c]tux[/c] and then [c]startx[/c].

But in this case wbar doesn't work (nothing happens) and the exit option of the SliTaz Logout windows never works, I have to hit [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Backspace] and then type [c]exit[/c] to change session; halt and reboot are OK (by the way, it misses a "l" in the text for exit option)

BUT...

For more than one hour it did not boot with tux excepted in this way:[c]

slitaz login: tux

tux@slitaz:~$ slim

tux@slitaz:~$ startx

[/c]

And then it's worked again a few times without I change anything and now it doesn't work again...

???

When I'm logged as root and launch slim, never problem; SliTaz starts as tux without asking me and when I exit, the Login windows opens. And all is working fine.

Today I've noted two strange things:

[*]when something is open (SpaceFM or Midori or...), prompt does not appear when opening Sakura till you hit a key

[*]yesterday I can have the help text typing [c]wbar -help[/c] in a terminal; today depending if I'm tux or root:

[c]

tux@slitaz:~$ wbar -help

Problem load font file. /usr/share/fonts/truetype/dejavuesans.ttf

/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/claws-mail.png Couldn't load icon image.

root@slitaz:/home/tux# wbar -help

Problem load font file. /usr/share/fonts/truetype/liberation/LiberationMono-Regular/12[/c]

In this case (root), a button appears on the left side of the screen annd whem I click on it:

[c]sh: wbar-config: not found[/c]

Oh yes I found! It was because I've done the upgrade of Wbar that it was working, I just check it.

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

Cell, thanks a lot for your intensive testing

first - I have done quite a lot of small changes and any upgrade is dangerous, that something gets broken. The question is, are my changes working and what should be included in 5.0

I have the same "problems" with login on my portege with the trident grafic card - only tux / slim / startx works from text mode, but with autologin I have no problem.

one more question: does tazx work on youre machine - boot to text, log in, get root, run tazx get tux again and startx and please post also the output of lspci

and just in case - dont use the iso from the mailing list only this one linked in the first post - there are some more bugs in iso from the mailing list

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

Hi kultex,

The question is, are my changes working and what should be included in 5.0

All that I used work fine (excepted I cannot play with Wbar options but really not a major problem).

What should be included in 5.0? My opinion is SliTaz must remain SliTaz: light, fast and free; free to adapt it as we like. I never thank enough SliTaz developers for saving my old computer - and my wallet ;-)

with autologin I have no problem

Unfortunately, autologin never woks for me, as for rolling (and 4.0 since my boss changed my computer). I always boot in text mode.

Fortunately, today SliTaz-test doesn't want to start with [c]tux / startx[/c] (short way). So I boot as you mention: [c]tux > su/root > tazx > exit > startx[/c] (long way) and it works each time.

I then alternatively use the 2 methods several times: short way always fails, long way always works.

Here is the output of lspci:[c]

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

its good that the long way works fine, because I would like to include this as a bootoption (start TazX)

please can you do one more try - start with autologin and when it boots to black screen, hit strg (ctrl) + alt + backspace - I had this today on a Athlon with Nvidia MCP61 components - after hitting this combination I got the slim login and it started without any problems

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

OK. Forum was down this morning and now, I'm at my office.

It seems to me when I get a black screen that ctrl+alt+backspace (as ctrl+alt+suppress) has no effect, I have to reboot.

I will try this evening and let you know.

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

My mistake. When I get a black screen:

ctrl+alt+backspace -> return to mode text

[c]startx[/c] again -> SliTaz starts

Same with the new iso.

exit choice from tazbox logout doesn't work when SliTaz started with [c]tux[/c] and then [c]startx[/c]; works only when SliTaz started with [c]su/root[/c] and then [c]slim[/c]

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

Working here also in a VM, despite what I said earlier.

It did not work since i had allocated ONLY 192 MB of RAM, more is required... Fine with 1GB.

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

sorry Ceel, I have to ask you again, because I cannot reproduce this - all my machines start without any problem: can you please run from the terminal:

tazbox logout

and post the error

Re: Testing iso with kernel 3.2.50

Don't be sorry kultex and be sure you work more for me than I work for you ;-)

[c]tux@slitaz:~$ tazbox logout<br />
Obt-Message: Xinerama extension is not present on the server[/c]
EDIT:

and when I hit a key to exit, a second message:

[c]tux@slitaz:~$ tazbox logout

Obt-Message: Xinerama extension is not present on the server

Obt-Message: Failed to open an Input Method

tux@slitaz:~$ e[/c]
