Hi All 
im just back from a conversation with wireless linux kernel guys, and its confirmed: from now on, Backports will support only mainstream distros.
For Slitaz4, that means lots of troubles.. 
Because of course a lot of options present in mainstream distros, are not in Slitaz4!
So, here I found I guess the most important, improvement requests for Slitaz FIVE:
1) Adding the kernel config CRYPTO_CCM,
2) Adding a new working lib for eeprom_93cx6, the one in Slitaz4 does NOT work.
3) Adding a new working lib for ipv6, the one in Slitaz4 does NOT work.
4) Adding a modinfo version with all options, included -F
5) Adding CRDA regdomains support
Because of those missing, actually its impossible (..very difficult) to compile new Backports in Slitaz4.

If this is Debian Backports, then it doesn't matter since SliTaz is not based on Debian.
You do, however, make a few good suggestions on what needs to be added to our Kernel.

well, interesting what you say.. as far as I know, compat-drivers, now migrated to project Backports, its the only way to upgrade drivers on any linux distro.. I have been applying regularly compat-drivers to Slitaz4 since its birth - that fixed indeed few issues..!
So how do you upgrade to latest drivers in Slitaz4 without using Backports?
At the moment compiling it yourself or using a compatible converted package. Both are harder if the kernel is missing certain features, meaning you need to recompile the kernel before you can use that driver.

I love Slitaz, I always loved it from its birth.. it still needs looots of improvements, but I love it: few megabytes with all I need and ONLY what I need, portable everywhere! 
Of course, you are free to change whatever you want in new Slitaz5, but please-please do not touch the syslinux kernel append logic (.. ,rootfs1.gz,rootfs2.gz,myapps.gz, ..) its vital for all my applications.. thanks
concerning the rootfs.gz, does the system of "russian dolls" make a sense nowadays ? 99% of users use a system with more than 512 ram. I support the core version which works with unebootin and is more reliable

Russian Doll refers to how each rootfs references the one before it and increases in complexity as it goes. Example, with the default 4-in-1 iso we have four rootfs.gz files, numbered from rootfs1.gz to rootfs4.gz, each loading a bit of the system art it goes - rootfs1 is the linux, busybox and general - called 'base', then there is rootfs2 that adds Xorg to the enviroment called 'JustX', then rootfs3 with basic GTK added to the former two called 'Gtk Only' and finally rootfs4 that adds all the graphical apps and desktop enviroment to the previous 3 - we call that 'core'.
The first problem is that each rootfs.gz file needs more RAM, with base needing only about 8MB while core needs around 192Mb for the LiveCD to load. The second problem with the russian doll approach also doesn't work with USB key creation software like Unetbootin.
What he's proposing is that since 512Mb RAM is common these days, that we drop the whole 4-in-1 approach and create a single flavour based on the core rootfs.gz

Are you guys really sure about this statement, that 99% of all user apply RAM > 512 MB? Would Slitaz not loose some kind of identity if it stops to support older hardware? Technically I cannot see the advantage of particular this detail.

I dont know you, but I dont need any freaking Unetbootin to setup my usb stick with Slitaz4.. just format the usb as fat, expand the Slitaz iso, copy the files inside the usb as is, run syslinux on the usb, end
The usb is now bootable with Slitaz4, just add or remove the "russian dolls" you like and ready to go
btw, just see now from top in Slitaz4 standard+my dolls: 225332K Mem used.. and I DO pride myself for having the most ancient indestructible forever working laptop with just 512 ram on earth.. so, what you want more from life? some real russian doll? )
p.s. hate that beaver code editor, its just a big BUG with a name.. cant even open a c+ file, see nothing, and the search/replace option fails.. please remove it.. leafpad editor in comparison is a notepad++ also that sakura terminal is bugged and completely useless, xterm is waaay better.. and wireshark? oh for crist sake, I tried to recompile new version, mission impossible.. please some 007, update it on the repo, thanks
It would be a shame to see those old 128Mb ram laptop machines having to go to the tip.
