Slitaz #1 bug, is it fixed?

In my opinion (as well as many others), slitaz biggest problem was ditching the desktop system in place in version 2 that helped to insure that Slitaz desktop x server functioned.

In 3 a lot of people left slitaz because this was not a priority.

Is the functionality of the desktop once again a main concern? (I mean from the 35 mg iso, and easy for anyone to set up?)

I would love to write an article about the comeback of slitaz, but as long as the easy functionality of the desktop is not a main concern, us desktop orientated users will be shy-ing away from using slitaz.

A bug is a flaw or misfeature created by a programming error. What you're describing is not a 'bug', but a matter of taste.

You assume that just because something isn't according to your taste that the majority agree with you - this is not the case. You also assume that because only SliTaz 2 is natively fits your taste that it's thusly the only version worth using. This is also false.

The wonder of Linux and Open Source in general is that you're free to modify it to FIT your tastes and then release the modified version so that others can enjoy it too.

You could modify SliTaz 4 and cooking so it's desktop works exactly like it does in SliTaz 2. Really dude, stop expecting others to fall into your way of thinking and do all the work for you. Do it yourself and give them proof as to why your way is better. Have some fun with it.

I just want to underline Trixar_zas words - what do you expect from a iso with less than 50 mg? - there is a secret word - called tazx that solves all the problems - in 3.0, 4.0 and will solve it also in 5.0. Its well documented

Re: Slitaz #1 bug, is it fixed?

if you don't know how to set up networking in cli, and the gui doesn't work you are screwed. So yes, it is an issue.

I can solve this problem. But I am a computer tech that has been in the IT field since 1988, and has forgotten more about computers than most people know.

The new linux geek that doesn't know how to do this because he/she has had the gui all along thanks to  a giant os like Ubuntu, will be screwed too.

This is not for me. If you would have read the original post, you would see I am enthusiastic about Slitaz. this is for slitaz, so that more people will find this unique OS appealing and will spread the word.

It's funny how a positive post can be jumped on by negative comments.

I want slitaz to be more popular, not less. can tazx get a gui desktop up and running without internet connectivity?

If you want to use a small distro, you will inevitably need to know something of how it works.

MSWindows was originally based on top of MSDOS, & you had to tell it what drivers were needed for your machine to work.

You can not compare Ubuntu with SliTaz in any meaningful way, they are created for totally different people/users. (You are trying to compare a Mini to a Rolls Royce.)

Perhaps it would be nice to have a gui interface to basic setup software, but it all adds to the size of a distro, & SliTaz's main claim to fame is that it is one of the smallest useful Linux distros available, & long may it remain so.

Edit: If you want a small distro with most everything included, AntiX is the one I would recommend, it is very light on ram useage.

@fatmac

Agree, AntiX is nice, but its just another "compromise" os.. if you install it persistent its still ok, but its not good for who prefers ONLY live ram boot wink

@Dennis

In my opinion you are partially right, as Trixar is also partially right.

It happens often in a lot of forums, that moderators start gaining more and more on the arrogant side than on the moderator side... which means, if Trixar could have expressed the same concepts but with different words, now nobody would be screwed hehe smile)

Re: Slitaz #1 bug, is it fixed?

What Dennis described wasn't a bug, but more his preference. In the way he put it, it also seemed he felt that others agreed with his preference - even making the leap to calling it the reason so many people stopped using SliTaz. I mearly correct him on these points.

Considering how I've responded to similiar remarks in the past, I would have to say it's pretty mild and no amount of careful words would have saved me from a bad reaction. I've come to terms with the fact that no matter what I say or how carefully I say it, some people will always find something offensive in it.

Personally, I don't find your (Trixar_za) answers at all offensive, they are usually to the point.

I also agree that the desktop/WM & included programs are a personal choice, but they can be changed by the user without much difficulty.

I used to use command line programs a lot, because I didn't need graphics. Now I just need the basics to use a web browser & watch videos/movies, or to look at my photos.

The people who put together distros do so in their own time & are not paid to do so, they are very generous people who give freely of their time for the benefit of others, please remember that fact.
