Help with usb wifi adapter...

   Hello. I'm trying to get my usb wifi adapter to work. I assume that I need some driver/firmware specific to my device. Running lsusb on my other linux computer shows this output for the adapter:

   Bus 002 Device 006: ID 0b05:17ab ASUSTek Computer, Inc. USB-N13 802.11n Network Adapter (rev. B1) [Realtek RTL8192CU]

   I don't have ethernet ability on this laptop, so I will need to download whatever packages/files are necessary and move them over to my laptop to use them. Also, I currently have SliTaz 4.0 installed. Can someone give me a simple step by step instruction on how to get this working? Thanks in advance.

   Hi physic,

   Unfortunately it is unavailable in the SliTaz-4.0.
   The thing is that you need a file (according to my internet searches for "0b05:17ab") /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin that is present in the current SliTaz-Rolling, but is absent in the SliTaz-4.0 packages repository.

   Instruction for current SliTaz-Rolling:
   Download package: http://mirror.slitaz.org/packages/cooking/firmware-rtlwifi-20141201.tazpkg
   Transfer package to your SliTaz using USB-Flash.
   Double click package, enter root password, click "Install" button.
   Reboot.

   If this package from SliTaz-Rolling is usable in SliTaz-4.0 (really I don't know) you can install it in your SliTaz-4.0 in the same way as described above.

   Will do. Thank you! I'll have to try it out. In case I want to use a different adapter (for example, a PCMCIA one), how do you know what package is necessary for different adapter ID numbers? Is there a list or something somewhere? If I used a PCMCIA card that has usb ports on it (not for networking, just extra usb's), would I need a certain package for that to work as well? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I'm not well educated on how this stuff works with Linux.

   Okay. So I decided to install SliTaz-Rolling and did what you said. It still didn't work, so I fiddled with the network.conf file and changed "WIFI=" to "yes", WIFI_INTERFACE=" to "wlan0", and "WIFI_KEY_TYPE=" to "wpa". Is this good? I also went under Applications->Preferences->Wi-fi configuration and my wifi networks appeared and my wifi adapter's light came on. All good things so far. I clicked connect on the network, but I still can't seem to be able to use the internet browser. Also, if I go to the network connection icon on the panel, it says "lo". What does this mean? Is there something else I have to do or did I mess something up?

   Update: Still not working correctly. I changed the network connection to "wlan0". Also, when I click "start wifi", the light on the adapter blinks once, but nothing seems to happen otherwise. Maybe it's a configuration issue?

   Hi physic,

   Easiest way to configure Wi-Fi connection is to use TazPanel. Open TazPanel, click on green "man" icon on the right top side of the TazPanel, enter "root" in the first field and root password (also "root" if you not changed it yet) in the second field, click OK, now you're root and green "man" changed into brown "spider".

   Next in the TazPanel menu click Network -> Wireless. If network is not started yet, start it.
   Now select your network from the networks list, enter password, click OK or Enter. Wait about 20 seconds. If all OK now you're connected.

   About network applet from LXPanel. It is only indicator. Now when you're connected, select "wlan0" there to see Wi-Fi connection info. If you can't find something like "wlan0" or "wlan1" there, then you're not connected.

   As for equipment in general. Search internet for pair of your Vendor ID : Device ID (four hexadecimal numbers and ":" and another four hexadecimal numbers). Possible you're find info from device driver you need.

   It's working now! Thanks! I didn't realize you could change the network settings as root from the panel. I'm very impressed at the speed and efficiency of this operating system considering I'm running it on a 266 MHz Pentium 2 with 288MB of ram. Beats Windows 98 by a mile! It uses about 110MB of ram sitting still, and even with the TazWeb running I still have 115MB free and haven't had to use any of my swap partition. Pretty impressive.

   No. Normally you just have to plug it before boot (this is not hot-pluggable). The device would be listed by lspci.
   I used to have one on my previous laptop which only had USB 1.1 ports.
