I have a few packages like Thunderbird and xset which constantly disappear after reboot so I have to reinstall them again. I have found a post on making xset settings permanent but don't really get it. Many thanks for any idea. This is my first post, thanks.

What about other packages you installed? Does them disappear too?
Seems like you have not "full hard disk installation". Or I not right?
Do you install SliTaz? Or do you run LiveCD?
If you install SliTaz in "frugal" or "LiveUSB" mode then you need to repack initrd -- file that contain whole SliTaz's filesystem. You can do it by 'tazusb writefs gzip' from terminal or from desktop-right-click menu.
Second method for LiveUSB is to put your packages to '/home/boot/packages'. Just install what you need, open '/var/cache/tazpkg/4.0/packages' folder and copy all packages to '/home/boot/packages'.

Thanks, I had indeed tried to boot from usb once and prepared a stick for this. As I wasn t sure if that worked I finally installed from liveCD. Somehow the software had made it to the motherboard as it functioned without CD but it looked like it didn t really work the way it should, still offering me to install on hard disk, pretty weird. Any idea? I took a liveCD which was Xubuntu but after inserting I was asked for the BIOS password last night, surprisingly, for the first time ever since I deactivated this after purchase 5 years ago and can t remember it. As no chance seems there to get the machine running I'm now offline til my new computer is delivered.. I will stick to slitaz but may install an alternative as well. I will check then what you proposed, many thanks, again.
