Hey all. I have an idea. We take xscreensaver, strip it down to a bare minimum, add in a SliTaz GNU/Linux Image or Text floating screensaver and add it to SliTaz 4. We can split the other screensavers into different packages, so anybody that wants them can just download these packages to get more screensavers. This way SliTaz can come with a basic screensaver and won't require a huge xscreensaver download.
I'm in the process of playing around with a version I just compiled, so stay tuned ;)

Have you tried slitaz-fbsplash.tazpkg on cooking?
Maybe you could package some themes for this?
Potential boobytrap is it's not activated with a boot code.
When it fails it kills the boot so you can't get in without a rescue OS to turn it off.
For those interested in setting up tazfbsplash:
#tazpkg -gi slitaz-fbsplash
Xfbdev requires vga= line in boot code.

Edit from grub menu: screen=text vga=791 <=this worked on my hardware.
Login as root at console
tazfbsplash on
tazfbsplash test
Tazfbsplash works so I leave it on.
Start slim and permanently add vga=791 to grubs menu.lst,add slim back to RUN_DAEMONS= of /etc/rcS.conf
If you can't get tazfbsplash test to work:
Reboot and try a different VGA=7xx number
If the splash test fails and you give up don't forget:
tazusbsplash off
Otherwise on the next reboot you may get locked out.
If your locked out boot another slitaz to the rescue and make FBSPLASH="no" in /etc/rcS.conf
Don't forget screen=text removes slim:
Add slim back to RUN_DAEMONS= of /etc/rcS.conf
Otherwise slim/Xserver won't auto start on next boot.
tazusbsplash is turned on/off and theme set in /etc/rcS.conf and started by /etc/init.d/rcS

Have you experimented with different framebuffer settings in grub cmdline?
16bpp=16 bit per pixal=>XGA High Color=>65536 Colors

not sure, I put the lowest 769 in /boot/grub/menu.lst, but still the same message. what am I doing wrong? my screen resolution is 1024x600 (if it makes any difference)...

If you've tried vga=785 vga=788 vga=791 vga=794 vga=798 slitaz-fbsplash is not going to work with your hardware.

If I understand correctly, fbsplash is for displaying splash image during boot process.
Show me your splash image (attach here exact file).

Oh, I was not right. I have googled this problem and found that you need 16bpp video mode, not 16bpp image. So don't send here any image, image can be any 24bpp jpeg file with correct dimensions.
Maybe vga=ask in the kernel options line helps to see all supported video modes and select one with 16bpp if it exists.

Hey guys, thanks for you responses! I think the image is located in /etc/fbspash/slitaz, I can see it's a plain black 1024x768 2.4MB .ppm image.
Could it be something to do with the /etc/fbsplash/fifo file, not sure what it does, but it seems that /usr/bin/tazfbsplash.sh fails to write to it (line 172: can't create /etc/fbsplash/fifo). Also, when I try to open it with leafpad or beaver it hangs (it opens blanks, but the program won't close, I have to end process manually)...
I must admit I have tried on both a desktop PC and netbook, and had same luck...

OK, here's what I tried - duplicated/renamed "slitaz" theme in /etc/fbsplash, converted 2.4MB .ppm image into 7.4KB .png image, renamed it back into .ppm, activated the theme via # tazfbsplash box, but the output is still same ("only 16 bpp, blah-blah..."). Am I on the rght track at least? Has anyone actually got it to work before?

yes, certainly! and I set different VGA values in /boot/grub/menu.lst (on Slitaz partition) and then run # tazfbsplash test from terminal, is this the right way to do it? My bootloader is BURG though, handled by other OS...
after all, what is the main reason? if I activate fbsplash the system won't boot! is it also because of 16bpp, or something else?

Do you see 2 penguins at the top of the screen when slitaz is booting?
If no the frame buffer is not working.
Does BURG chainload to slitaz grub?
If no
BURG is booting slitaz directly and the VGA= settings go in the BURG menu.
tazfbsplash test in console mode only with frame buffer active by booting screen=text or killing the xserver
