I understand what your are saying, that's why I created modules package to dynamically add local environments (e.g. MANPATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH) of packages installed on /usr/local. See http://modules.sourceforge.net/
Since this is what typically the production environment of High Performance Computing (HPC) centers, the live DVD aims to emulate this environment.

Just don't use /usr/local - What is more work? Creating dynamic paths that points to /usr/local or just using --prefix=/usr with the configure script? The latter is easier and more efficient. Why continually bump your head against /usr/local when you don't have to? Just keep it simple and portable. There is no need to complicate it for yourself. That's one thing I never understood about human nature... :/

I followed Trixar_za's advice and finally did get flash working although when i visited YouTube and tried to watch a video the picture was very poor but after a few more seconds it improved a lot. Plus the message informing me that i needed extra plugins still appeared at the top of the window.
I then opened up a terminal and typed:
tazpkg recharge
tazpkg upgrade
and the output was: firefox 4.0 ---> 3.5.7 network warning
Upgrade now (y/N)?
I foolishly typed yes "y" and firefox-3.5.7 was installed
I have since used tazpkg remove firefox-3.5.7 and re-installed firefox-4.0 going through the steps you suggested in an earlier post. The problem now is that although i am informed that the get-flash-plugin-1.2.tazpkg is installed i cannot view YouTube video's?
